Composer and conductor Leonardo García-Alarcón interprets the Passion of Jesus according to Judas in La Passione di Gesù in an inimitable manner.
The Argentine musician Leonardo García-Alarcón (1976) studied piano in his native country. At the age of 21, he moved to Geneva, where he studied music theory and harpsichord. In 2005, he founded his ensemble Cappella Mediterranea and became chief conductor and artistic director of the Chœur de Chambre de Namur (Chamber Choir of Namur, Belgium). Today, he works all over the world, conducting new and old (opera) works and teaching singing and harpsichord at the Baroque department of the Geneva Conservatory.
García-Alarcón composed La Passione di Gesù. It is a grand oratorio and a reinterpretation of the Passion of Jesus according to the Gospel of Judas. A Gospel in which Judas is not seen as the betrayer, but as the only disciple who understood Jesus.
With hisCappella Mediterranea and Chœur de Chambre de Namur, composer and conductor Leonardo García-Alarcón brings this work to life in an innovative way. The innovation lies primarily in the polyphonic approach, which is both Renaissance- and Baroque-oriented but also clearly possesses contemporary characteristics, with the use of firm dissonances and rhythm, like, for example, in Il Terremoto.
The work is an ode to vocal polyphony in general, which appears in all its nuances. Often in short fragments that alternate at lightning speed, requiring the listener to remain alert. This makes the compositions captivating and adventurous. Essentially, La Passione di Gesù is a large composition where the passages flow into one another. So, no separate arias, chorales, intermezzos, etc., but one continuous flowing work that carries you through vocal history like a warm blanket. The combinations of bandoneon, harp, and percussion are unique. Supplemented by South American rhythms, this gives the music a fantastic, worldly character, beautifully audible in La Colpevolezza Degli Apostoli, where soloists are supported by a choir and rhythmic orchestra that ends with a Picardy third (a major ending of a minor work). Truly magical. Something similar can also be heard in Chacarera de Santiago. An Argentine dance performed rhythmically here with fiery vocal and string work, followed by Zamba Argentina. The zamba is a calm dance, in contrast to the chacarera partner dance. Here, it is performed with magical cohesion by a tenor duo, cello, and percussion. This contrasts, for example, with the opening work La Profezia, the announcement. Sung from a distance (with reverberation) by two sopranos. An unison work of virginal beauty.
In Incredulti degli Apostoli, a beautiful fusion of Renaissance music with contemporary vocal acrobatics is heard, complemented by choir and orchestra (including the magnificent Viola da Gamba). Even the timbre of the blues makes an appearance in Blues, a work in which the tenor solo is supported by trombone, clarinet, and percussion, among others, followed by Gospel, with a rich polyphonic Poulenc timbre. Meanwhile, in Maldictio Judae, a clear fugal Bach influence is audible, albeit in a South American style. Particularly noteworthy is the use of the vibraphone, which, playing a second voice, sparingly supports the expansive soprano melody, increasing its depth. This is followed by Il Sepolcro vuoto, a melody with descending chromaticism that once again allows us to perceive the timbre of Francis Poulenc.
The performances are of high quality. The vocalists sing with palpable organic suppleness, which is not easy in these double-layered compositions. The timbres sometimes change so rapidly that, as a (choir) vocalist and instrumentalist, you have to switch gears very quickly to capture the right timbre. This requires excellent musicians who can not only switch gears quickly but also immediately strike the right intensity, which is indispensable. As a listener, quite a bit is also asked of you. But whoever takes the time to sit down quietly and listen carefully, will be enchanted by a multifaceted religious work that, with its rich musical perspectives, is a unique experience. The beautiful accompanying booklet, in which all texts are printed in three languages, supplemented with background information and photos, will certainly help with this.
