Dona Nobis Pacem heet het nieuwe album uit Taizé met 17 liederen die een weerspiegeling zijn van de gebedservaring van de afgelopen tien jaar.

In 1940 werd in het Franse dorpje Taizé de internationale, oecumenische gemeenschap Taizé gesticht door broeder Roger (Schutz). Een gemeenschap die vooral gericht is op jonge mensen, met als doel vrede te bevorderen door gebed, meditatie en zang voor iedereen die daar behoeft aan heeft, ongeacht (religieuze) achtergrond.

Dat daar muziek bij hoort, moge duidelijk zijn. Zo verschenen er al vele CD’s met liedjes die werden opgenomen in Taizé, waaronder de albums Liederen uit Taizé en de fanatische cd Taizé – Music of Unity and Peace, met het wonderschone Beati vol Poveri en In manus tias, Pater.

Op dit nieuwe album Dona Nobis Pacem staan acht nieuwe en negen al eerder opgenomen stukken, met teksten in het Frans, Engels, Spaans, Duits, Pools en Latijn. Het koor bestaat uit zo’n 25 jongeren uit verschillende landen die met deze liederen uitging geven aan innerlijke spiritualiteit en geloof. Ze worden bijgestaan door twee vocale solisten en zes musici op gitaar, cello, klarinet, hobo en fluiten. Dit alles onder leiding van Jorge Losana.

De liederen uit Taizé zou je stapelliederen kunnen noemen. De goed in gehoor liggende melodieën worden steeds herhaald, dat een meditatieve werking heeft. Bovendien is het metrum van deze melodieën óp de tel, dus geen gebruik van syncopen, waardoor het soms psalm-achtig aandoet en de melodieën een zeker rust uitstralen. Er zijn geen B of C gedeeltes, geen couplet/ refrein en geen doorwerkingen. De melodie wordt in zijn originele vorm herhaald. Het stapelen zit hem in de variatie in de arrangementen waarin bij elke herhaling de instrumentatie wijzigt door het gebruik van een solo-stem of een solo-instrument (hobo, fluit of de gitaar die een variatie speelt) of de vocalen die worden uitgebreid. En, zoals gezegd, deze herhalingen werken contemplatief en geven de muziek een fijne inspirerende en innerlijke energie.

Het album opent met Adsumus Sancte Spiritus, een lied in 3-en, met een melodie die je even optilt door de ruimte, overgoten door solo-vocalen. Prachtig is ook Let all who are thirsty come. Een lyrische, meerstemmig gezongen melodie die langzaam steeds rijker wordt naarmate je hem vaker hoort, ondersteund door gitaar en achtereenvolgens aangevuld met cello, fluit, klarinet en hobo.

Dona Nobis Pacem 2 valt op door een cadens, waarin de stijgende melodie wordt afgewisseld met solo-vocalen. Mooi is ook V Tebi Je Izvir Zivljenja, een lied met strelende, melodische voorhoudingen die de oplossing van de melodieën even uitstelt. Retourne, mon ami… valt op door de fugatische inzetten die de melodie een extra intentie bezorgd. Het enige a-cappella lied Chabite Bci Hapohn is opvallend door de soberheid en zou wat meer navolging mogen hebben.

De opnames van Dona Nobis Pacem vonden plaats in de kerk van Taizé in 2024. Een totaal-opname waarbij alle musici tegelijk zingen en spelen. Het voordeel hiervan is dat je als luisteraar een totaal-gevoel meekrijgt en moeiteloos de contemplatieve en bespiegelende beleving kunt ondergaan, met een gevoel alsof je erbij bent.

The new album from Taizé is titled Dona Nobis Pacem, featuring 17 songs that reflect the prayer experience of the past ten years.

In 1940, the international ecumenical community of Taizé was founded in the French village of Taizé by Brother Roger (Schutz). It is a community primarily focused on young people, aiming to promote peace through prayer, meditation and song for anyone in need, regardless of (religious) background.

And music is an integral part of this, for sure. Many CDs have already been released featuring songs recorded in Taizé, including the albums Liederen uit Taizé and the fantastic CD Taizé – Music of Unity and Peace, featuring the wondrous Beati vol Poveri and In manus tias, Pater.

This new album, Dona Nobis Pacem, features eight new pieces and nine previously recorded tracks, with lyrics in French, English, Spanish, German, Polish and Latin. The choir consists of about 25 young people from various countries who express inner spirituality and faith through these songs. They are accompanied by two vocal soloists and six musicians on guitar, cello, clarinet, oboe, and flutes. All this is under the direction of Jorge Losana.

The songs from Taizé could be called layered songs. The catchy melodies are repeated continuously, which has a meditative effect. Moreover, the meter of these melodies is on the beat, so there is no use of syncopation, which (sometimes) gives it a psalm-like feel and makes the melodies radiate a certain tranquility. There are no B or C sections, no verse/chorus and no development. The melody is repeated in its original form. The layering lies in the variation in the arrangements, in which the instrumentation changes with each repetition through the use of a solo voice or a solo instrument (oboe, flute, or the guitar playing a variation) or the vocals being expanded. And, as mentioned, these repetitions have a contemplative effect and lend the music a fine, inspiring, and inner energy.

The album opens with Adsumus Sancte Spiritus, a song in a three-beat, featuring a melody that briefly lifts you into space, bathed in solo vocals.Let all who are thirsty come is also beautiful. A lyrical, polyphonic melody that slowly becomes richer the more often you hear it, supported by guitar and supplemented by cello, flute, clarinet, and oboe.

Dona Nobis Pacem 2 stands out due to a cadence in which the ascending melody alternates with solo vocals. Also beautiful is V Tebi Je Izvir Zivljenja. A lovely song with caressing, melodic suspensions that briefly postpone the resolution of the melodies. Retourne, mon ami… is a special piece due to the fugal entries that lend the melody extra intensity. The only a cappella song is Chabite Bci Hapohn, which, due to its austerity, deserves more emulation.

The recordings of Dona Nobis Pacem took place in the church of Taizé in 2024. It is a total recording in which all musicians sing and play simultaneously. The advantage of this is that, as a listener, you get the total feeling and can effortlessly undergo the contemplative and reflective experience, with a feeling as if you were there.
