Het Portugese accordeon-kwartet Danças Ocultas laat je verdwalen in hun album Inspirar.

Danças Ocultas werd opgericht in 1989 en bestaat uit de accordeonisten Artur Fernandes, Filipe Cal, Filipe Ricardo en Francisco Miguel. Vier musici die de (Portugese) folk een warm hart toedragen, maar hun muzikale horizon al jaren, met succes, verbreedt. Ze worden hierin bijgestaan door Gabriel Gomes, de accordeonist van de legendarische Portugese band Madredeus, met o.a. zangeres Terese Salguiero.

Zij bespelen de concertina, de knoppenaccordeon, ook wel diatonische accordeon genoemd. Het instrument is qua klank milder dan de accordeon en bovendien klinkt er een andere toon bij duwen of trekken aan de balg, net zoals we dat kennen bij de mondharmonica.

De stukken zijn melodisch en hebben een vertellend en zelfs metaforisch karakter. Het gebruik van maatwisselingen, modulaties (zoals in Pulsar), van onregelmatige maatsoorten (7-tels in Afeiçōes) en het gebruik van afwijkende akkoorden (die je niet vaak hoort in de folkmuziek, zoals het verminderd akkoord) geeft de muziek een werelds karakter. Bovendien wisselen de partijen per accordeon, dat veel vergt van de musici, aangezien ze hun plek moeten bepalen binnen het arrangement en daarmee moeten anticiperen op hun medemusici om de accordeon-kleur te waarborgen. Dat is natuurlijk in elk muziekstuk het geval, maar hier gaat het om 4 dezelfde instrumenten. Het resultaat is voortreffelijk samenspel dat van Danças Ocultas een uniek kwartet maakt.

Tango-kleuren komen voorbij in Lago. In mineur, met een schitterende tegenmelodie in het 2de gedeelte van de compositie. In Jusante wordt het ritme gebroken gespeeld en gecomplementeerd door de andere accordeon die fragmentarisch en thematisch aanvult, dat zorgt voor een prachtig samenspel. Iets soortgelijks treffen we aan in Pedra do Sol, al heeft hier de thematiek lange lijnen (met ostinato ritmiek in de begeleiding), met een duidelijke knipoog naar de tango. Het album sluit af met Lumière. Een bezwerende, bijna mystieke en daarmee indrukwekkende compositie met een complementair slot.

Danças Ocultas levert een wereldlijk mooi album af. De muziek is verfijnd en zit compositorisch en dynamisch zo goed in elkaar, dat je nauwelijks beseft hoe knap het is dat deze vier musici klinken als één groot accordeon-orkest. Inspirar is een album waarin je kunt verdwalen en worden ontvoerd door kleurrijke accordeon-melancholie die nergens sentimenteel wordt, maar muzikaal inspireert.

The Portuguese accordion quartet Danças Ocultas lets you get lost in their album Inspirar.

In 1989 Danças Ocultas was founded and consists of accordionists Artur Fernandes, Filipe Cal, Filipe Ricardo and Francisco Miguel. Four excellent musicians who have a deep affection for (Portuguese) folk music, but who have been successfully broadening their musical horizons for years. They are assisted in this by Gabriel Gomes, the accordionist of the legendary Portuguese band Madredeus, featuring singer Terese Salguiero, among others.

They play the concertina, the button accordion, also known as the diatonic accordion. The instrument has a milder sound than the accordion and, moreover, produces a different tone when pushing or pulling the bellows, just as we know from the harmonica.

The pieces are melodic and have a narrative and even metaphorical character. The use of time signature changes, modulations (as in Pulsar), the use of irregular time signatures (7 beats in Afeiçōes) and the use of unconventional chords (which are not often heard in folk music, such as the diminished chord) gives the music a worldly character. Moreover, the parts alternate per accordion, which demands a great deal from the musicians, as they must know their place in the arrangement and thereby anticipate their fellow musicians to ensure the accordion color. That is of course the case in every piece of music, but here we are dealing with 4 identical instruments. The result is excellent interplay that makes Danças Ocultas an unique quartet.

Tango colors appear in Lago. In a minor key, with a brilliant counter-melody in the second part of the composition. In Jusante, the rhythm is played in a broken manner and complemented by the other accordion, which adds fragmentarily and thematically, creating a beautiful interplay. We find something similar in Pedra do Sol, although here the themes feature long lines (with ostinato rhythms in the accompaniment), with a clear nod to the tango. The album concludes with Lumière. An enchanting, almost mystical and therefore impressive composition with a complementary ending.

Danças Ocultas recorded a worldly beautiful album. The music is refined and compositionally and dynamically so well put together, that you hardly realize how clever it is that these four musicians sound like one large accordion orchestra. Inspirar is an album in which you can get lost and be carried away by colorful accordion melancholy that never becomes sentimental, but really inspires musically.
