On the album Bomba Flamenca, a wondrous, fictional musical world of Charles V, set in early 16th-century Spain, is performed by the French ensemble La Tempête under the direction of Simon-Pierre Bestion.

The Flemish King Charles V (1500–1558 and his eldest son Philip de Schone) reigned over the Spanish Empire in the early 16th century. He serves as the source of inspiration for conductor and arranger Simon-Pierre Bestion for the album Bomba Flamenca. Bestion compiled an imaginary requiem for Charles V featuring compositions by Spanish composers from the early 16th century. The 11 movements Processio, Introitus, Kyrie, Graduale, Tractus, Sequentie, Offertorium, Sanctus, Angus Dei, Communio, and Absolutio all have a link to a Mass (Requiem), but not in this order or composition. They are an exquisite and well-thought-out compilation by Bestion. A collection of instrumental and vocal works composed by Luis de Naravaez, Cristobal de Morales, Nicolas Gombert, Juan del Encina, Thomas Crecquillon and Pedro Escobar, among others, and arranged by Simon-Pierre Bestion for his ensemble La Tempête.

About 20 singers are accompanied in varying lineups by some 15 instrumentalists on violin, viola da gamba, theorbe (a type of lute), double bass, flutes, clarinet, cornet/trumpet, organ, and percussion. The result is music of stunning, contemplative beauty. These musicians touch the heart of the music and, with it, the soul of the listener. They let the music be the music and perform it with deep-rooted respect. No exaggerated vocal vibrato, but rather a blended harmony. No soloistic instrumental antics, but coherent interplay. This gives the compositions perfect unity and natural depth, making them sound solid.

Notable pieces include MoralesKyrie Eleison. A vocal, heavenly melody subtly supported by violins and trumpet with plenty of reverb. Alongside the Arab-Andalusian Nawa athar and, further on in the Sephardic Irme kero madre a Yerushalayim (Mother, I am going to Jerusalem), which stands out due to the duduk (Armenian double-reed instrument) and the melody sung in unison. In the masterful Congaudeant Catholic by Albert de Paris, a Gregorian melody grows into a polyphonic vocal structure that becomes increasingly rich in color.

The festive pieces Ad Mortem festinamus (by J. Del Encina) and El Fuego by Mateo Flecha shine with trumpets, percussion, and shawm. Rhythmic and driving compositions. In the Sanctus section, three vocal works by Pedro de Escobar and Marbriano de Orto are performed. Polyphonic works sung with infallible beauty, supported by organ, flutes, trumpet, shawm, and percussion. Music where you almost forget to breathe, just so as not to miss a single note.

I do have a habit of placing a dot on the back of the CD sleeve next to tracks which I find very worthwhile. With Bomba Flamenca, the CD cover is full of dots…. Whát a beautiful compositions, whát an excellent performances and whát a production: truly magnificent!
