Svetu is het debuut-album van de Slowaakse groep Neha! waarop zij een brede en inspirerende vocaliteit laten horen.

Zangeres en animator Zuzana Vranka Žiaková richtte in 2020 de vocale groep Neha! op, met als doel de Slowaakse muziek internationaal te promoten. Ze werd daarin bijgestaan door de Oekraïense koordirigente Bohdana Ljashko, die de groep naar een hoger vocaal plan tilde. Een jaar later was Neha! al te vinden op (internationale) podia.

Svetu is het debuut-album van Neha! waarop de groep (die zelf naast zang ook enkele percussie-instrumenten bespeeld) wordt bijgestaan door cellist Juraj Škoda (schitterend in Zozulenka), harpist Andy Aquarius, beatboxer Emil Smoliga en de percussionisten Roman Turtev en Michal Fedor.

Neha! zingt liederen uit Slowakije, Oekraïne, Spanje, Bulgarije en Roemenië, die handelen over hennep, de natuur, de dood, gastvrijheid en de bruiloft. De groep beschikt over bijzondere vocalisten die op natuurlijke en organische wijze mengen tot een eclatant, vocaal timbre.

De arrangementen variëren van unisono-werk naar homofone passages, waarbij alle stemmen meerstemmig zingen in hetzelfde ritme. En let wel, deze zelfde ritmiek is ook nog gepuncteerd en swingend, wat het bijzonder moeilijk maakt en het er écht op aan komt om tegelijk (en zuiver) te zingen. En dat is precies wat er gebeurd. Neha! beschikt over zes muzikale zangeressen die nauwgezet zingen, waardoor de stemmen prachtige mêleren. In een wervelwind wisselen de vocalen van solo naar unisono, naar homofone samenzang om te eindigen in polyfonie, prachtig hoorbaar in het Servische lied Domacine, of in Izgrejala mesecinka waar nog een modulatie, en volume- en percussie-variaties worden toegevoegd. Bijzonder is ook Mi Dimandas. Een Sefardisch lied van de verdreven Joden uit Spanje, eind 15de eeuw. In dit lied wordt weer een heel andere tonaliteit gebruikt die typisch is voor de Sefardische muziek, prachtig sereen en met respect uitgevoerd.

Met hun album Svetu hoopt Neha! meer respect en verbinding te creëren tussen verschillende culturen, waar muzikale verscheidenheid hopelijk leidt tot verbroedering, in een wereld die door angst voor het onbekende steeds meer van zichzelf vervreemdt.

Svetu is the debut album by the Slovak group Neha!, on which they present a broad and inspiring vocal range.

Singer and animator Zuzana Vranka Žiaková founded the vocal group Neha! in 2020 with the aim of promoting Slovak music internationally. She was assisted in this endeavor by Ukrainian choir conductor Bohdana Ljashko, who elevated the group to a higher vocal level. A year later, Neha! already performed on (international) stages.

Svetu is the debut album by Neha!, on which the group (which plays several percussion instruments in addition to vocals) is assisted by cellist Juraj Škoda (brilliant in the song Zozulenka), harpist Andy Aquarius, beatboxer Emil Smoliga and percussionists Roman Turtev and Michal Fedor.

Neha! sings songs from Slovakia, Ukraine, Spain, Bulgaria and Romania, with lyrics about hemp, nature, death, hospitality and weddings. The group features exceptional vocalists who blend naturally and organically to create a striking vocal timbre.

The arrangements range from unison work to homophonic passages where all voices sing polyphonically in the same rhythm. And mind you, this same rhythm is also punctuated and swinging, making it particularly difficult and truly a matter of singing simultaneously (and in tune). And that is exactly what happens. Neha! features six musical singers who sing with precision, allowing the voices to blend beautifully. In a whirlwind, the vocals switch from solo to unison, to homophonic singing, ending in polyphony, beautifully audible in the Serbian song Domacine, or in Izgrejala mesecinka, where modulation, volume and percussive variations are added. Also noteworthy is the song Mi Dimandas, a Sephardic song of the expelled Jews from Spain in the late 15th century. In this song you hear a completely different tonality typical of Sephardic music, performed beautifully serene and with respect.

With their album Svetu, Neha! hopes to create more respect and connection between different cultures, where musical diversity hopefully leads to brotherhood in a world that is becoming increasingly alienated from itself, due to fear of the unknown.
