English version below
Of in Fami Cantal l’amor.
English version
The Spanish ensemble Capella de Ministrers and the vocal group AVocal CdM pay an excellent tribute to Francis of Assisi with their new album San Francesco – Guillare di Dio.
Francis of Assisi was an Italian monk who lived from approximately 1181 to 1226. He was the inspiration for the Franciscan order, which was founded later, where members lived in pure poverty as equals (hence why all monks wear the same habit) and were of service to society: every guest or traveler is welcomed as if they were God himself. This way of life has been an inspiration to believers and non-believers alike for centuries. During his lifetime, Francis cared for the poor and lepers and was a great lover of animals, specially birds. That is why the annual Animal Day is celebrated on October 4, the anniversary of his death.
This year, 2026, marks 800 years since Francis died on October 4. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX two years after his death, and two years after that, the first Franciscan monastic orders were established in the Netherlands, in Den Bosch, later in Maastricht (1234), and in Utrecht in 1240.
The Spanish ensemble Capella de Ministrers (conducted by Carles Magraner) presents an ode to the legendary Francis of Assisi with San Francesco – Giullare de Dio. The album is divided into six parts: 1. Song of the Creatures / 2. The Sun / 3. Moon, Wind, Stars / 4. Water, Fire / 5. Earth / 6. Death & Life. Each part begins with an antiphon, a religious Gregorian work preceding a psalm. Originally, this was done to set the mood of the day. On this album, the antiphon is used to announce the atmosphere of the upcoming religious compositions. The composers of these works are unknown, but the pieces have been skillfully arranged for the ensemble Capella de Ministrers. A quintet featuring violins, bagpipes, chirimía (a type of oboe), citola (a type of guitar), harp, lute, and percussion, supplemented by eleven vocalists from the AVocal CdM.
Centuries-old works are performed with rich expression and love. Performances where the melodies speak for themselves, where vibrato or other superfluous ornaments are barely used, and where a clear, austere instrumentation has been chosen with care and attention, varying from piece to piece. From a cappella (in the antiphons, sung in Latin) to modest accompaniments where the voice is supported, for example, by the chirimía, a counter-harmony on the violin, or a harmonic vocal addition. It is precisely this austerity that gives the music its sacred depth, bringing serene peace and religious intimacy.
But it is also a celebration. As in the song A Deus por Santa Maria, which, with call-and-response, culminates in a lively hymn of praise to Mary, who ensured that it finally rained in Jerez after a long, dry period. Or in Fami Cantal l’amor. A hymn to love, where the sung version is repeatedly followed by an instrumental one, to emphasize the-light-of-love. A compositional, vocal-instrumental approach that was widely used in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
But the most impressive is the hymn Sia Laudatio San Francesco. A personal ode to Francis, in which he is beautifully honored by various solo vocalists, with, very subtly in the background, the chirping of birds that he was so fond of.
