Het debuut-album Traditional Colours van Woodlands Bäckafall slaat een brug tussen folk uit diverse (West-)Europese landen.

Het kwartet Woodlands Bäckafall ontstaat als het Woodlands Duo (Kristina Leesik: viool/ zang en Justyna Krzyżanowska: harp/ zang) en Bäckafalls (Fredy Samuel Lundh: nyckelharpa/ zang en Hampus Grönberg: gitaar) besluiten samen een concert te geven tijdens het Göteborg Festival in 2020. Na slechts één repetitie en een succesvol concert, is de fusie een feit.
Het resultaat is een frisse benadering van folk uit Zweden, Ierland, Bretagne, Engeland, Schotland en Polen, gelardeerd met eigen werk. Op ingenieuze wijze zijn de stukken gearrangeerd waar vooral het gebruik van de harp met de nyckelharpa (druktoetsenviool met resonantie-snaren) opvalt.
Bijzonder zijn de stukken Sommerspolska, een Zweedse dans met een schitterend, vocaal tweede gedeelte. Het ritmespel (dubbeling en triolen-spel) in Atherfield. Ook Wild Mountain Thyme valt op met een serene pentatoniek (5-toonladder) en tweede stem (met zelfs wat bleu-notes). Er wordt gezongen in het Gaelic, Frans, Engels, Zweeds en Pools (heel bijzonder in het Poolse bruiloftslied Chmiel, met een imposant unisono slotdeel). Het album eindigt met Skogsmarsch. Een langzame, ietwat melancholieke mars met de unieke en duidelijke combinatie van nyckelharpa, harp en reciterende slotvocalen.
De stukken zijn slim gearrangeerd waar op originele wijze gebruik is gemaakt van ritme-wisselingen, instrumentatie, meerstemmigheid en crescendo’s. En let wel, het kwartet gebruikt alleen snaarinstrumenten die naadloos op elkaar aansluiten Zowel tokkelende en strijkende snaarinstrumenten brengen een scala aan klankkleuren, met prachtige vocalen die de muziek zijn top-glans bezorgt. Het geheel bewerkt in een eigen Woodlands Bäckafall-metier, met groot respect voor de folk-cultuur.

Woodlands Bäckafall’s debut album, Traditional Colours, bridges the gap between folk music from various (Western) European countries.
The quartet Woodlands Bäckafall was formed when the Woodlands Duo (Kristina Leesik: violin/vocals and Justyna Krzyżanowska: harp/vocals) and Bäckafalls (Fredy Samuel Lundh: nyckelharpa/vocals and Hampus Grönberg: guitar) decided to perform at a concert together at the Gothenburg Festival in 2020. After just one rehearsal and a successful concert, the fusion became a reality.
The result is a fresh approach to folk music from Sweden, Ireland, Brittany, England, Scotland, and Poland, interspersed with original work. The pieces are arranged in an ingenious manner, where the use of the harp with the nyckelharpa (dru-keyed violin with resonant strings) stands out.
The opening piece Sommerspolska, a Swedish dance with a magnificent vocal second section, is striking. The rhythmic interplay (doubling and triplet playing) in Atherfield is also noteworthy. Wild Mountain Thyme stands out with a serene pentatonic scale (5-note scale) and second voice (even featuring some blue notes). The vocals are sung in Gaelic, French, English, Swedish, and Polish (particularly noteworthy in the Polish wedding song Chmiel, with an impressive unison final section). The album ends with Skogsmarsch. A slow, somewhat melancholic march, featuring the unique and distinct combination of the nyckelharpa and harp, and reciting final vocals.
All the pieces are cleverly arranged, making original use of rhythmic changes, instrumentation, polyphony, and crescendos. And mind you, the quartet uses only string instruments that blend seamlessly together. Both plucked and bowed strings produce a wide range of timbres, with beautiful vocals that give the music its peak luster. So the music is crafted in a unique Woodlands Bäckafall style, with great respect for folk the culture heritage.
