Op Camino gaat Duo Delibes op zoek naar hun Spaanse roots waar met verve werk voor piano en viool van vier Spaanse componisten wordt belicht.

Het Duo Delibes bestaat uit de zussen Sara en Esther Gutiérrez, respectievelijk op piano en viool. Geboren in Valladolid (noord Spanje) werken ze tegenwoordig vanuit Duitsland en Nederland.

Naar aanleiding van de vele concertbezoekers-vragen over Spaans repertoire, besloot het duo onderzoek te doen naar het cultureel erfgoed van vier componisten uit hun vaderland: Frederico Mosquera (1986), Andrés Gaos (1874-1959), José Palomino (1755-1810) en Luis de los Cobos Almaraz (1977-2012).

Het resultaat is een muzikale spanwijdte die zich uitstrekt vanaf het Classicisme tot Impressionisme/eigentijds.

Op accurate wijze benadert Duo Delibes het repertoire. Om te beginnen met de avontuurlijk spannende, dynamische en soms zelfs sprookjesachtige openingscompositie Metamorfosis, die in 2017 werd opgedragen aan het duo door de componist Mosquera. In dit werk horen we twee zelfverzekerde musici die de muziek weids en openhartig tegemoet treden. Waar piano en viool elkaar complementeren in melodie, ritme en klankkleur in een haast orkestraal timbre. Hiermee zet het duo de toon voor het hele album.

Deze royale opzet wordt namelijk verder uitgebreid in Sonata para violin y piano van Gaos. Een schitterende compositie die het hoogtepunt is van het album Camino. Waar strelende thematiek zich fraai hecht aan onverwachte wendingen, bijzondere harmonische structuren en plotseling veranderende dynamiek. Het werk wordt met een verfijnde souplesse uitgevoerd in een schilderachtige, verhalende setting, die vooral mooi tot uiting komt in het Adagio. Hier vullen piano en viool elkaar zo mooi oor-strelend aan in thematiek en doorwerking. Dat wordt voortgezet in Allegro Moderato. Een beweeglijk deel, in 3-en. Ook hier excelleert de muziek in wonderlijk samenspel, met een schitterend polyfoon middendeel waar, in een kleurrijke sensatie, de brede piano-akkoorden worden aangevuld met viool-passages in snelle toonladder-loopjes.

Met de classicistisch compositie Duetto per piano Forte e Violino van Palomino horen we een heel ander timbre. Een werk met een link naar Scarlatti en Boccherini. Het is zeer waarschijnlijk dat Palomino en Boccherini elkaar kenden van hun tijd in Madrid, waar Boccherini het prachtige La Musica Notturna della Strada de Madrid componeerde. Een vroeg programmatisch werk waarin de Italiaanse componist de roerige staten van Madrid muzikaal vertaalde, met o.a. het zeer melodische Passa Calle. Het vijfde deel en hoogtepunt (nog geen 2 minuten) uit deze 7-delige compositie.

Het afsluitende werk Nana del Campo Grande is een epische compositie waar viool en piano ieder hun eigen weg gaan in verkwikkende thematiek met markante harmonieën.

Duo Delibes kiest voor uniek repertoire, komt zelfverzekerd over in klank-en-gebaar en volbracht met durf deze persoonlijke Camino-reis, waarmee de luisteraar wordt verrast met nieuw en vrijwel onbekende, Spaanse composities.

On their album Camino, Duo Delibes explores their Spanish roots, where works for piano and violin by four Spanish composers are highlighted with verve.

Duo Delibes consists of sisters Sara and Esther Gutiérrez, on piano and violin respectively. Born in Valladolid (northern Spain), they currently work from Germany and the Netherlands.

In response to numerous questions from concert lovers regarding Spanish repertoire, the duo decided to research the cultural heritage of four composers from their homeland: Frederico Mosquera (1986), Andrés Gaos (1874-1959), José Palomino (1755-1810), and Luis de los Cobos Almaraz (1977-2012).

The result is a musical span extending from Classicism to Impressionism/contemporary.

Duo Delibes approaches the repertoire with accuracy. To start with the adventurous, exciting, dynamic, and at times even fairytale-like opening composition Metamorfosis, which was dedicated to the duo in 2017 by the composer Mosquera. In this work, we hear two self-assured musicians who approach the music with a broad and candid heart. Where piano and violin complement each other in melody, rhythm, and timbre in an almost orchestral approach. With this, the duo sets the tone for the entire album.

This generous setup is further expanded in Sonata para violin y piano by Gaos. A magnificent composition that is the highlight of the album Camino, where caressing themes beautifully intertwine with unexpected twists, distinctive harmonic structures, and suddenly changing dynamics. The work is performed with refined suppleness in a picturesque, narrative setting, which is particularly beautifully expressed in the Adagio. Here, piano and violin complement each other so beautifully and pleasingly in terms of theme and development. This continues in Allegro Moderato, a lively movement in thirds. Here too, the music excels in wondrous interplay, featuring a brilliant polyphonic middle section where, in a colorful sensation, broad piano chords are complemented by violin passages in fast scale parts.

With the classicist composition Duetto per piano Forte e Violino by Palomino, we hear a completely different timbre. A work with a link to Scarlatti and Boccherini. It is very likely that Palomino and Boccherini knew each other from their time in Madrid, where Boccherini composed the beautiful La Musica Notturna della Strada de Madrid. An early programmatic work in which the Italian composer musically translated the turbulent streets of Madrid, including the highly melodic Passa Calle. The fifth movement and highlight (less than 2 minutes) of this 7-part composition.

The concluding work Nana del Campo Grande is an epic composition where violin and piano each go their own way in invigorating themes with striking harmonies.

Duo Delibes opts for unique repertoire, comes across as confident in sound and gesture, and completed this personal Camino journey with daring, surprising the listener with new and virtually unknown Spanish compositions.
