Souad Massi is door de jaren heen uitgegroeid tot een muzikale wereldburger die veel stijlen mengt op haar nieuwe album Zagate.

De eerste keer dat ik Souad Massi zag optreden was tijdens de Womex, de World Music Expo. Een grote wereldmuziekbeurs die in 2001 neerstreek in Rotterdam. Een ietwat verlegen zangeres met gitaar stond alleen op het podium, zich enigszins ergerend aan het in- en uitlopend publiek: een fenomeen dat tijdens een muziekbeurs zeer gebruikelijk is. Inmiddels groeide ze uit tot een veelzijdig muzikante, zangeres en gitariste die muzikaal een brede weg inslaat.

Ze werd geboren in Algerije, speelde in een rockband maar moest haar geboorteland verlaten omdat niet iedereen de politiek getint teksten kon waarderen. Tegenwoordig woont ze in Parijs. Haar nieuwe, negende album Zagate werd geproduceerd door de Britse gitarist en producer Justin Adams. Een muzikant die geen enkele cross-over schuwt. Hij werkte met, onder andere, Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin), de Malinese band Tinariwen, de Italiaanse violist Mauro Durante en de Algerijnse Raï-zanger Rachid Taha.

Zagate is een muzikaal en zeer kleurrijk patchwork waar veel stijlen elkaar doorkruisen. Waar de woestijnblues in Zagate, met bendir (handtrommel) en Arabische signatuur, prachtig wordt gevolgd door het serene L’equidation. Een ode aan de vrede die door Massi verhalend wordt gebracht. Verderop klinkt de folkgitaar met ney (Turkse fluit) in Tiri, naast het pop-georiënteerde Ana Inassan, dat in Sawt wordt aangevuld met strakke elektrische gitaar, rollende drums en luchtige pianosolo. Er wordt gezongen en gesproken in het Frans en Algerijns-Arabisch door Massi, Gaël Faye en Youssoupha. Zagate is een volwaardig album waarop Massi uitblinkt in gevarieerd, zelf geschreven werk.

Ze heeft een ietwat donker, vocaal timbre met een fijne, luie timing die zo vertrouwd en herkenbaar is. Wát ze ook zingt, het blijft zo typisch Souad Massi!

Over the years, Souad Massi has grown into a musical global citizen who blends many styles on her new album Zagate.

The first time I saw Souad Massi perform, was at Womex, the World Music Expo. A major global music trade fair that landed in Rotterdam (The Netherlands) in 2001. A somewhat shy singer with a guitar stood alone on stage, slightly annoyed by the crowd entering and leaving: a phenomenon that is very common at a music fair. Since then, she has grown into a versatile musician, singer, and guitarist who is charting a broad musical course.

She was born in Algeria, played in a rock band, but had to leave her native country because not everyone could appreciate the politically charged lyrics. Nowadays, she lives in Paris. Her new, ninth album, Zagate, was produced by the British guitarist and producer Justin Adams. A musician who does not shy away from any crossover. He worked with, among others, Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin), the Malian band Tinariwen, the Italian violinist Mauro Durante, and the Algerian Raï singer Rachid Taha.

Zagate is a musical and very colorful patchwork where many styles intersect. Where the desert blues in the song Zagate, with bendir (hand drum) and an Arabic signature, is beautifully followed by the serene L’equidation. An ode to peace that is narrated by Massi. Further on, the folk guitar with ney (Turkish flute) can be heard in Tiri, alongside the pop-oriented Ana Inassan, which is complemented in Sawt by tight electric guitar, rolling drums and an airy piano solo. Singing and speaking in French and Algerian Arabic are performed by Massi, Gaël Faye and Youssoupha. Zagate is a full-fledged album on which Massi excels in varied, self-written work.

She possesses a somewhat dark vocal timbre with a fine, lazy timing that is so familiar and recognizable. Whatever she sings, it remains so typically Souad Massi!
