Martini Grey is de band van de Groningse drummer Ancel Klooster die met topmusici uit de Nederlandse jazz-scene een werelds geluid laat horen.

Vanuit de Groningse klei blikken vijf Groningse musici de wijde wereld in, waarbij ze zich muzikaal lieten inspireren door diverse stijlen jazz en geïmproviseerde muziek en dit samenbrengen op het album Country City. Dat zijn drummer en initiatiefnemer Ancel Klooster, pianist Joost Swart, bassist Jeroen Vierdag, trompettiste Suzan Veneman en saxofonist Efraïm Trujillo: de enige die niet in Groningen is geboren, maar in Lynwood (Californië).  

Een concert van het legendarische duo George Adams/Don Pullen (resp. sax, fluit/piano) met drummer Danny Richmond was voor Ancel Klooster het kantelpunt om drums te gaan studeren. Het door Don Pullen gecomponeerde nummer Song from the Old Country is daarmee een subtiele ode aan dit legendarische duo.

Klooster is een kleurrijk musicus die met steady drumwerk en doorgewinterd gemak met bassist Vierdag een solide basis vormt voor het kwintet Martini Grey. We kwamen hem al eerder tegen in het trio van pianist Boelo Klat en in de orkestbak van de musicals Chicago en 42nd Street.

Opvallend is het samenspel van trompet en saxofoon. Beide instrumenten krullen glansrijk om elkaar heen, spelen beide thema’s en wisselen elkaar, om-en-om, af met een tweede stem. De stukken zijn met zorg gearrangeerd, waarbij er genoeg ruimte is gecreëerd voor solo’s. Prachtig is de pianosolo in Saint Martin. Een werk dat ingenieus hinkt tussen calypso en bop en daardoor heerlijk avontuurlijk is. Iets soortgelijks tref je ook aan in de verhalende compositie Cinco años en Los Angeles (van Trujillo). Een werk met een rijke kleuring, waar een fraaie solo op de elektrische piano (Fender Rhodes) klinkt, gevolgd door een bassolo en weelderig drumwerk met veel bekkens. De calypso signatuur komt nog terug in Song from the Old Country (ook op dit album), dat van origine een vocaal stuk is, maar door Martini Grey instrumentaal wordt uitgevoerd. Op het album staan twee vocale stukken die worden gezongen door gastzangeres Francien van Tuinen in het Engels en Nederlands. De afsluiter New York City Cab Ride is een compositie van Michael Monkau, waarin de band Martini Grey een bigband allure krijgt: energieke hard-bop, met een solo van gastmuzikant Juan Martinez op baritonsax, een strakke pianosolo (met modale randjes) en een vitale drumsolo.

Martini Grey is the band of Groningen drummer Ancel Klooster, which presents a worldly sound with top musicians from the Dutch jazz scene.

From the Groningen soil (in the north of the Netherlands), five Groningen musicians look out into the wide world, drawing musical inspiration from various styles of jazz and improvised music and bringing this together on the album Country City. These are drummer and initiator Ancel Klooster, pianist Joost Swart, bassist Jeroen Vierdag, trumpeter Suzan Veneman, and saxophonist Efraïm Trujillo: the only one who is not born in Groningen, but in Lynwood (California).

A concert by the legendary duo George Adams/Don Pullen (sax, flute/piano respectively) with drummer Danny Richmond was the turning point for Ancel Klooster to start studying drums. The track Song from the Old Country (also on this album), composed by Don Pullen, is therefore a subtle ode to this legendary duo. Klooster is a colorful musician who, with steady drumming and seasoned ease, forms a solid foundation with bassist Vierdag for the quintet Martini Grey. We encountered him previously in pianist Boelo Klat’s trio and in the orchestra pit of the musicals Chicago and 42nd Street.

The interplay between trumpet and saxophone on this album is striking. Both instruments intertwine brilliantly, play both themes, and alternate with a second voice. The pieces are arranged with care, creating ample space for solos. The piano solo in Saint Martin is excellent. It is a work that ingeniously straddles calypso and bop, making it delightfully adventurous. You will find something similar in the narrative composition Cinco años en Los Angeles (by Trujillo). A work with rich coloring, featuring a beautiful solo on the electric piano (Fender Rhodes), followed by a bass solo and lush drumming with many cymbals. The calypso signature returns in Song from the Old Country, originally a vocal piece, but performed instrumentally by Martini Grey. The album features also two vocal pieces sung by guest vocalist Francien van Tuinen in English and Dutch. The closer, New York City Cab Ride, is a composition by Michael Monkau, in which the band Martini Grey takes on a big band allure: energetic hard bop, with a solo by guest musician Juan Martinez on baritone saxophone, a tight piano solo (with modal edges), and a vital drum solo.
