De groep BCUC uit Zuid-Afrika brengt een geraffineerde, opzwepende mix op hun nieuwe album The Road is Never Easy.

BCUC staat voor Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness, komt uit Soweto en bestaat uit zeven leden. De groep werd opgericht door een aantal fanatieke musici die elkaar in 2003 ontmoetten tijdens een aantal muziekworkshops in een buurthuis.

De groep maakte inmiddels 4 cd’s waarop ritme de absolute kern blijft in hun muziek. Ook op hun nieuwe album The Road is Never Easy zijn de stukken een aaneensluiting van (poly)ritmes die als een puzzel in elkaar grijpen en worden gespeeld op conga’s en bass-drum, aangevuld met (bas)gitaar. Dat maakt hun muziek uniek. Er klinken geen akkoorden, alleen ritmische (bas)gitaarnoten, aangevuld met percussie. Dat lijkt een wellicht een beperking, maar voor BCUC is dit juist de kracht waardoor hun muziek in intensiteit wint.

Meerstemmige voor- en nazang, de variatie van instrumenten, het gebruik van effecten (galmen en tremolo) en de wijze van musiceren zijn werkelijk indrukwekkend. Ze zingen in Zuid-Afrikaanse, lokale talen (zoals in de Zulu kliktaal) en in het Engels over de sociale onrechtvaardigheid, de harde Zuid-Afrikaanse werkelijkheid en racisme.

Zuid-Afrikaanse chants worden afgewisseld met de mbaqanga, een stijl die in jaren ’60 razend populair werd in Zuid-Afrika en een mix is van kwela en jazz. Daarnaast zit de muziek vol Afro-beat, funk, rap en hiphop (zoals in Music), soul en psychedelische elementen. Ze componeren hun eigen stukken die krachtig en energiek zijn en excelleren in aanzwellende dynamiek, vorm en tempo en worden gezongen met overtuigende vocalen van Zithulele Jospeh Zabani en Kgomotso Neo Mokone.

The Road is Never Easy is een innovatief album waarmee BCUC bewijst dat met inventiviteit, vakmanschap en doorzettingsvermogen de weg steeds begaanbaarder wordt.

The South African group BCUC presents a sophisticated, exhilarating mix on their new album, The Road is Never Easy.

BCUC stands forBantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness, hails from Soweto, and consists of seven members. The group was founded by a number of passionate musicians who met each other during several music workshops at a community center in 2003.

The group has since released four CDs, on which rhythm remains the absolute core of their music. Also on their new album The Road is Never Easy. The pieces are a succession of (poly)rhythms that interlock like a puzzle and are played on congas and bass drum, complemented by (bass) guitar. That makes their music unique. There are no chords, only rhythmic (bass) guitar notes, supplemented by percussion. That might seem like a limitation, but for BCUC, this is precisely the strength of their music, which gains in intensity as a result.

Call- and respond vocals, the variety of instruments, the use of effects (reverb and tremolo), and the style of music-making are truly impressive. They sing in South African local languages ​​(such as the Zulu click language) and in English about social injustice, the harsh reality of South Africa, and racism.

South African chants are interspersed with mbaqanga, a style that became wildly popular in South Africa in the 1960s and is a mix of kwela and jazz. Additionally, the music is full of Afro-beat, funk, rap, and hip-hop (as in Music), soul, and psychedelic elements. They compose their own pieces, which are powerful and energetic and excel in swelling dynamics, form, and tempo, and are sung with convincing vocals by Zithulele Joseph Zabani and Kgomotso Neo Mokone.

The Road is Never Easy is an innovative album with which BCUC proves that with inventiveness, craftsmanship, and perseverance, the road becomes increasingly passable.
