De Griekse zangeres Savina Yannatou maakt al jaren CD’s met haar ensemble Primavera en Salonico. Onder leiding van Kostas Vomvolos (op qanûn en accordeon) nam het ensemble baanbrekende albums op, waaronder Spring of Salonica (met muziek van de Sefardische joden), Virgin Maries of the World (met Marialiederen) en Songs of the Mediterranean met liederen uit het Middelands Zee-gebied. Het ensemble bestaat verder uit ney-speler (fluit) Harris Lambrakis, Yannis Alexandris op Arabische luit (ûd), violist Kyriakos Gouventas, contrabassist Michalis Siganidis en slagwerker Dine Doneff.

Watersong is een ode aan het water: de elementaire basisbehoefte en levensonderhoudende bron. Maar ook de spirituele benadering, als bij een doop of (weder)geboorte, komt aan bod. Naast de desastreuze verwoesting door het water, zoals in een storm of overstroming. De liederen op Watersong komen van verschillende delen van de wereld en worden gezongen in het Grieks, Arabisch, Cypriotisch, Corsicaans, Spaans, Italiaans, Engels en Iers.

De kristalheldere vocalen van Savina Yannatou passen goed bij de stem van de Tunesische zangeres Lamia Bedioui die op enkele stukken (mee)zingt. Savina’s stem heeft een ongekende vitaliteit en wendbaarheid. Non vibrato zingt ze de melodieën, maakt subtiel gebruik van versieringen en legt de juiste intonatie en diepgang in de muziek, zonder effectbejag. Dat maakt haar stem authentiek, puur en oprecht. Om dit het best tot zijn recht te laten komen, is er gekozen voor een sobere instrumentatie die per nummer veranderd. Alleen het hoogstnodige klinkt, hier en daar verrijkt met solistische thema’s, tegenmelodieën en ritmische ondersteuning. Hierdoor heeft de muziek een ingetogen timbre met een meditatief, bijna contemplatief karakter, dat zorgt voor een grote, overtuigende en bezielende zeggingskracht.

Savina Yannatou is a musical, timeless world traveler who lets the language of water speak on Watersong.

Greek singer Savina Yannatou has been making CDs for years with her ensemblePrimavera and Salonico. Led by Kostas Vomvolos (on qanûn and accordion), the ensemble has recorded groundbreaking albums, including Spring of Salonica (featuring music from Sephardic Jews), Virgin Maries of the World (featuring Maria hymns), and Songs of the Mediterranean, featuring songs from the Mediterranean region. The ensemble also consists of ney (flute) player Harris Lambrakis, Yannis Alexandris on Arabic lute (ûd), violinist Kyriakos Gouventas, double bassist Michalis Siganidis and percussionist Dine Doneff.

Watersong is an ode to water: the basic need and life-sustaining source. It also explores the spiritual approach, as in a baptism or (re)birth. Besides the disastrous destruction caused by water, such as in a storm or flood. The songs on Watersong come from different parts of the world and are sung in Greek, Arabic, Cypriot, Corsican, Spanish, Italian, English, and Irish.

Savina Yannatou’s crystal-clear vocals perfectly complement the voice of Tunisian singer Lamia Bedioui, who sings along on several tracks. Savina’s voice possesses unparalleled vitality and agility. She sings the melodies non-vibrato, subtly uses ornamentation and creates the right intonation and depth in the music, without the need for extravagant effect. This makes her voice authentic, pure, and sincere. To best showcase her voice, the instrumentation is sober and changes with each song. Only the bare essentials are heard, occasionally enhanced with solo themes, countermelodies, and rhythmic support. This gives the music a subdued timbre with a meditative, almost contemplative character, which ensures a great, convincing and inspiring expressiveness.
