The Longest Way Round is de nieuwe CD van de Amerikaanse pianist, accordeonist en componist Ben Rosenblum met zijn band Nebula Project.

Het album is een combinatie van diverse stijlen die Rosenblum bewandelt met 6 musici op trompet/ bugel, sax/ klarinet/ fluit, gitaar, bas en percussie en hijzelf op piano en accordeon.

Ben Rosenblum is een creatief musicus die geen enkele stijl uit de weg gaat. Op verrassende en inventieve wijze speelt hij een Caribische mix, met modale solo’s en horen we folk in Sheridna’s Reel. Vernieuwend is ook het werk Scenes Frozen in Time. Een suite die opent met een circus-achtige compositie, die door de vele chromatiek en dissonante harmonieën een acrobatische muzikaliteit in zich draagt. Iets soortgelijks ontstaat er in Part 1: Berlin. Een Tango-feel wordt overgoten met maat- en tempowisselingen, met een B-gedeelte met ‘lopende bas’, waardoor een jazz-melange ontstaat. Dit deel wordt gevolgd door Part 2: Old Friends, dat met zijn lyriek, een bewogen terugblik is op vervlogen tijden. In Part 3: Onslaught klinkt een strak gearrangeerd werk dat door zijn vele accenten en timbre-wisselingen het karakter van een small-bigband krijgt (met weelderig piano-intro, modale piano-solo en bevlogen contrabas-solo). Opvallende is het slot met een stevige gitaarsolo, gelardeerd door ritmisch merengue-pianospel, met een knipoog naar Michel Camilo.

Rosenblum is een meester in het schakelen van timbre, maat- en tempowisselingen en gebruikt fraaie thematiek. Geen enkele composite is stijlvast. Steeds klinken er diverse stijlen in zijn werk, waardoor zijn composities origineel, spannend en avontuurlijk zijn. Hij heeft zich omringd met vakbekwame musici die zijn composities perfect aanvoelen en de ruimte krijgen om in solo’s te schitteren.

Echter, het tweede deel van zijn CD beweegt de muziek zich meer richting jazz-georiënteerd repertoire. Zo is Circuolo een ritmisch en speels werk met een fraais sax-, slagwerk- en piano-solo. Is Albatros een modale compositie met de kleur van Herbie Hancock’s Maiden Voyage met mooi trompet- en basklarinet-werk. In Fool’s Gold schittert de hard-bop, met virtuoze piano-solo en is Last Call een groovy afsluiter om even bij te komen van al het innovatieve en afwisselende werk.

The Longest Way Round is the new CD by American pianist, accordionist, and composer Ben Rosenblum with his band Nebula Project.

The album is a combination of diverse styles that Rosenblum explores with 6 musicians on trumpet/flugelhorn, saxophone/clarinet/flute, guitar, bass, and percussion and himself on piano and accordion.

Ben Rosenblum is a creative musician who does not shy away from any style. In a surprising and inventive way, he plays a Caribbean mix with modal solos, and we hear folk in Sheridna’s Reel. Also innovative is the work Scenes Frozen in Time. A suite that opens with a circus-like composition, which, through its abundant chromaticism and dissonant harmonies, possesses an acrobatic musicality. Something similar emerges in Part 1: Berlin. A tango feel is infused with time signature and tempo changes, featuring a B-section with a ‘walking bass,’ creating a jazz blend. This section is followed by Part 2: Old Friends, which, with its lyricism, is a moving retrospective of bygone times. Part 3: Onslaught, is a tightly arranged work that, through its many accents and timbre shifts, takes on the character of a small big band (with a lush piano intro, modal piano solo, and spirited double bass solo). The conclusion is striking, featuring a powerful guitar solo interspersed with rhythmic merengue piano playing, with a nod to Michel Camilo.

Rosenblum is a master at shifting colors, beat & tempo changes and created beautiful thematic elements. Not a single composition is stylistically consistent. Diverse styles are constantly present in his work, making his compositions original, exciting, and adventurous. He has surrounded himself with skilled musicians who have a perfect feel for the right performances and have the space to shine in solos.

However, in the second part of his CD, the music moves more towards jazz-oriented repertoire. For instance, Circuolo is a rhythmic and playful work featuring a fine sax, percussion and piano solo. Albatros is a modal composition with the color of Herbie Hancock’s Maiden Voyage, featuring beautiful trumpet and bass clarinet work. Hard bop shines in Fool’s Gold, with a virtuoso piano solo and Last Call is a groovy closing piece, to catch a small all the innovative and varied work.

The Longest Way Round is a musical, lavish exposé in which Rosenblum showcases his craftsmanship as a musician, composer, and producer.
