Op de CD Ethiopiques 31 vinden we de Ethiopische zanger Moluken Mèlèssè die in de jaren 1972, ’75 en ’76 opnames maakte met de All Star Band, Venus Band en de Dahlak Band.

Muluken Mèlèssè (1954-2024) werd geboren in het zuiden van Ethiopië. Hij startte zijn muzikale carrière in de nachtclubs van hoofdstad Addis Abeba, net 12 jaar oud. Naast zanger was Mèlèssè ook drummer en nam zijn eerste opnames op toen hij 18 jaar oud was, in 1972. Hij groeide uit tot een gevierd zanger die een troost was voor de bevolking, die gebukt ging onder het militaire bewind in het Ethiopië van de jaren ’70. Veel muzikanten verlieten het land, maar Mèlèssè bleef in Ethiopië en emigreerde naar Amerika in 1984. Hij keerde de muziek de rug toe en werd een wedergeboren christen, die voornamelijk verbonden was aan de Ethiopische evangelische beweging.

Het album Muluken Mèlèssè is deel 31 van de schitterende Ethiopiques-serie. Een CD-compilatie-reeks met gevierde sterren uit de rijke Ethiopische jazz- en populaire muziekgeschiedenis uit de jaren ’60 en ’70. In 1997 werd Ethiopiques – Deel I uitbracht.

Muluken Mèlèssè heeft een warme, wendbare stem. Zijn vocalen zitten vol versieringen, die richting de Arabische signatuur neigen, maar door de begeleidingen van gitaar, keyboards, blazers, bas en drums toch richting een westers sjabloon worden gelaveerd. Het resultaat is een markante dualiteit van muziek met een heel persoonlijke klankkleur. De bands spelen een heerlijk groovy en ritmische sound waar Mèlèssè met gemak overheen zingt en er zelfs overheen lijkt te zweven, zo nu en dan, rijk gekleurd met vocale ornamenten. Fraai is de polyritmiek waar de drie-telsmaat regelmatig polyritmisch wordt voorzien van een twee-telsmaat. Daarnaast wordt er gebruik gemaakt van de typische Ethiopische tonaliteit, die zich beweegt over de pentatoniek (5 toons-toonladder) en een verlaagde 2de en 6de trap. Dat is wellicht wat technisch, maar met deze toevoegingen wordt de Ethiopische muziek zo eigen en bijzonder.

Het album Muluken Mèlèssè – Ethiopiques 31 is een ode aan een bevlogen en getalenteerde zanger die voor het westen (vrijwel) onbekend bleef, maar met deze CD (met uitgebreid informatieboekje) een prachtige herkansing krijgt.

On the CD Ethiopiques 31 we find the Ethiopian singer Muluken Mèlèssè, who recorded with the All Star Band, Venus Band, and Dahlak Band in 1972, 1975, and 1976.

Muluken Mèlèssè (1954-2024) was born in southern Ethiopia. He began his musical career in the nightclubs of the capital, Addis Ababa, at just 12 years old. Besides being a singer, Mèlèssè was also a drummer and made his first recordings at the age of 18, in 1972. He became a celebrated singer who brought comfort to the people suffering under the military regime in Ethiopia in the 1970s. Many musicians left the country, but Mèlèssè remained in Ethiopia and emigrated to America in 1984. He turned his back on music and became a born-again Christian, primarily associated with the Ethiopian evangelical movement.

The album Muluken Mèlèssè is part 31 of the brilliant Ethiopiques Series. A CD compilation series featuring celebrated stars from Ethiopia’s rich jazz and popular music history of the 1960s and 1970s. Ethiopiques – Part I was released in 1997.

Muluken Mèlèssè has a warm, agile voice. His vocals are full of ornamentation, tending towards an Arabic signature, yet steered towards a Western template by the accompaniments of guitar, keyboards, brass, bass, and drums. The result is a striking musical duality with a very personal timbre. The bands play a wonderfully groovy and rhythmic sound, over which Mèlèssè sings with ease and even seems to float, occasionally richly colored with vocal ornamentation. The polyrhythm is beautiful, with the three-beat time regularly polyrhythmically supplemented with a two-beat time. They also utilize the typical Ethiopian tonality, which moves across the pentatonic scale (a five-tone scale) and a flattened second and flattened sixth note of the scale. This may be a bit technical, but these additions make Ethiopian music so unique and special.

The album Muluken Mèlèssè – Ethiopiques 31 is an ode to a passionate and talented singer who remained (almost) unknown to the West. With this CD (with a comprehensive booklet) his music gets a wonderful second chance.
