Het Italiaans, traditioneel ensemble Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino viert met het nieuwe album Il Mito hun 50-jarige bestaan.

Met deze nieuwe CD blikt het Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino terug en kijkt de groep vooruit. Het ensemble werd opgericht door Rina Durante in 1975 en staat nu onder leiding van zoon Mauro. In het verleden werd in de arrangementen regelmatig gebruik gemaakt van elektronica en gewerkt met gastmusici, waaronder kora-speler (West-Afrikaanse harp) Ballaké Sissoko, trompettist Ibrahim Maalouf en drummer Stewart Copeland (The Police), waarmee de groep een bijzondere cross-over mix maakte.
De leden van de groep Canzoniere Grecanico Salentin componeerden steeds hun eigen muziek en op het album Il Mito staat zowel oud als meer recent werk. Zo is het titelstuk Il Mito een lied uit de beginperiode, geschreven door Rina Durante en op muziek gezet door Daniele Durante, de vader van Mauro. Het lied is daarmee een ode aan 50 jaar muziekgeschiedenis van Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino. De groep bestaat tegenwoordig uit 7 musici en is op Il Mito aangevuld met enkele gastmusici.
In een bezetting van (bas)gitaar, accordeon, blokfluit, klarinet, percussie en (meerstemmige) zang klinken 11 nieuwe en oude stukken. Vooral de meerstemmige zang is weergaloos, zoals in Quistione Meridionale of Fimmene Fimmene. Een lied dat doet denken aan de tralalero zang uit Genua, het noorden van Italië. Maar ook de strakke tarantella’s Dumenica Matina, Pizzia di Cosimino en Beddhu Stanotte worden voortreffelijk en opzwepend gespeeld en hebben een hoge live-ambiance. Ook hier zijn vocale kwaliteiten uitzonderlijk, zowel een- als meerstemmig, aangevuld met virtuoos accordeon-, mandoline- en vioolspel. Het innemende lied Lu Rusciu de lu Mare wordt charismatisch gezongen door gastvocaliste Rossella Pinto. Dat geldt overigens ook voor Il Mito waar verschillende zangers elkaar afwisselen. Deze wisseling van vocalen geeft het lied een extra dimensie, waardoor de melodie van diverse kanten wordt belicht.
Het ensemble Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino geeft met Il Mito een mooi overzicht van het rijke, muzikale verleden en daarmee het bewijs van muzikale veerkracht!

The Italian, traditional ensemble Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino celebrates its 50th anniversary with their new album, Il Mito.
With this new CD, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino looks back and forward. Founded by Rina Durante in 1975, the ensemble is now led by their son, Mauro. In the past, they regularly incorporated electronics into their arrangements and collaborated with guest musicians, including kora (West African harp) player Ballaké Sissoko, trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf, and drummer Stewart Copeland (The Police), creating a unique crossover mix.
Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino has always composed its own music and the album Il Mito, features both older and more recent compositions. The title track Il Mito is a song from their early days, written by Rina Durante and set to music by Daniele Durante, Mauro’s father. The song is thus an ode to 50 years of Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino’s music history. The group currently consists of seven musicians and is supplemented on Il Mito by several guest musicians.
With a lineup of (bass) guitar, accordion, recorder, clarinet, percussion, and (polyphonic) vocals, 11 new and old pieces are performed. The polyphonic singing is particularly magnificent, as in Quistione Meridionale or Fimmene Fimmene, a song reminiscent of the tralalero singing of Genoa, northern Italy. The tight tarantellas Dumenica Matina, Pizzia di Cosimino, andBeddhu Stanotte are also played superbly and rousingly, creating a high live atmosphere. Here too, the vocal qualities are exceptional, both in monophonic and polyphonic harmonies, complemented by virtuoso accordion, mandolin, and violin playing. The captivating song Lu Rusciu de lu Mare is sung charismatically by guest vocalist Rossella Pinto. This also applies to Il Mito, where several singers alternate. This vocal shift adds an extra dimension to the song and illuminates the melody from various perspectives.
The ensemble Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino offers a beautiful overview on Il Mito and demonstrates their rich musical past and musical resilience!
