Op haar debuut-album True Picture brengt zangeres en contrabassist Veronika Varga een uitgekiende collectie liederen uit Hongarije en Griekenland.

De Hongaarse contrabassist en zangeres Veronica Varga studeerde aan de Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest. Al jaren speelt ze in diverse formaties traditionele en aanverwante stijlen uit Hongarije, Griekenland en de Balkan. Op haar solo CD True Picture gaat ze terug naar de kern van deze stijlen. Ze ontdoet de muziek van al zijn franje en arrangeerde de liederen voor contrabas en (meerstemmige) zang (schitterend in Silence, met vogelgeluiden). In een enkele stukken horen we een gastbijdrage van cimbalomspeler Ion Curtaneu, accordeonist Benedek Réti en het a-cappella ensemble Lemonokipos in het Griekse lied The Sea.

Het resultaat is een album waarop Varga de kern van de muziek raakt. De zo herkenbare Hongaarse en Griekse vocalen, met al zijn karakteristieke versieringen en tonaliteiten, zing ze met een soepele vaardigheid, met een heldere, wendbare en overtuigende stem in fraaie stembuigingen. Zowel meerstemmig a-capella, zoals in de openingstrack Angyalka, als ook meerstemmig in het daaropvolgende Almodj szēpet (Sweet Dreams) met een sobere baspartij.

De sobere baspartijen vormen de kern van haar arrangementen. In Menny (Heaven) en Baby worden haar vocalen, ingetogen ondersteund door cimbalom en in Afino Gela (I Bid Farewell) zorgt het brede accordeonspel voor een aangename en subtiele toevoeging.

Met True Picture bewijst Veronika Varga dat ze met deze aanpak op prachtig overtuigende wijze de essentie van de muziek raakt.

On her debut album, True Picture, singer and double bassist Veronika Varga presents a sophisticated collection of songs from Hungary and Greece.

Hungarian double bassist and singer Veronika Varga studied at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest. For years, she has played traditional and related styles from Hungary, Greece and the Balkans in various ensembles. On her solo CD, True Picture, she returns to the essence of these styles. She strips the music of all its frills and arranges the songs for double bass and (polyphonic) voice (brilliant in Silence, with bird sounds). In some pieces, we hear guest appearances from cimbalomist Ion Curtaneu, accordionist Benedek Réti, and the a cappella Ensemble Lemonokipos in the Greek song “The Sea.”

The result is an album on which Varga touches the heart of the music. She sings the distinctive Hungarian and Greek vocals, with all their characteristic ornamentation and tonalities, with great, supple skill, in a clear, agile, and convincing voice, with beautiful inflections. She performs both a cappella polyphony, as in the opening track, “Angyalka,” and polyphonically in the subsequent “Almodj szēpet” (Sweet Dreams), featuring a restrained bass line.

The restrained bass lines form the core of her arrangements. In “Menny” (Heaven) and “Baby,” her vocals are subduedly supported by cimbalom, and in “Afino Gela” (I Bid Farewell), the expansive accordion playing provides a pleasant and subtle addition.

With True Picture, Veronika Varga proves that this approach captures the essence of the music in a beautifully and convincing way.
