Als er een nieuw album uitkomt van de Vlaamse accordeoniste Sara Salvérius, is het goed om je oren te spitsen….

Sara Salvérius is een meester op de accordeon, zowel als componiste als uitvoerend musicus kwamen we haar al tegen in diverse combinaties. Maar steeds heeft alle door haar uitgebrachte muziek een fraaie emotionele diepgang, is melodieus en wordt met verve uitgevoerd. Voor haar nieuwste meestwerk Verhalen zonder Woorden heeft ze de klassiek geschoolde (bas-)klarinettist Jean-Philippe Poncin gevraagd haar muzikaal bij te staan.

Op verzoek van het Klarafestival verbleef Salvérius in april 2024 een week in een zorgcentrum. Daar sprak ze met bewoners die haar grote en kleine verhalen vertelden die veelal refereerden aan de vergankelijkheid van het leven. Deze ontmoetingen inspireerde haar tot acht nieuwe composities voor accordeon en (bas)klarinet met titels als Le départ, Tussenland, Henri of (het indrukwekkende solo-accordeonstuk) Jef.

De composities zijn contemplatief, met fraai bewegende, harmonische kleuren, waarin de accordeon, de klarinet (en vooral de basklarinet) prachtig mêleren en voortdurend met elkaar in gesprek zijn. In langzame, zelfs gedragen tempi, vullen ze elkaar aan in ritmiek, thematiek en solistisch. Opvallend zijn daarbij de lage klanken van de accordeon in Wee mij niet, waarover de klarinet een soort klaagzang laat horen, die zelfs richting de (Griekse) miroloi neigt. Of in Clair-obscur waar de lage accordeon-tonen de grond doet splijten om daarna met hoge klanken het licht toe te laten in een tremolo-achtig metier met warme klarinetkleuren. Het album eindigt met Phase 6. Een folk-georiënteerd en vrolijk danswerk, in een 5-tels maat, dat ervoor zorgt dat het album optimistisch eindigt.

Op de CD Verhalen zonder Woorden staan inderdaad muziekstukken zonder tekst. Maar door schitterende thematiek en bevlogen spel, krijgen deze instrumentale composities een enorme zeggingskracht. Echt muziek waar woorden te kort schieten, om de schoonheid te duiden…luisteren dus!

Whenever a new album by Flemish accordionist Sara Salvérius is released, it’s a good idea to keep your ears open…

Sara Salvérius is a master of the accordion, both as a composer and performer, and we’ve encountered her in various ensembles. But all her music consistently possesses beautiful emotional depth, is melodic, and is performed with verve. For her latest masterpiece, Verhalen zonder Woorden (Stories Without Words), she invited classically trained (bass) clarinetist Jean-Philippe Poncin to provide musical accompaniment.

At the request of the Belgium Klarafestival, Salvérius spent a week in a care center in April 2024. There, she spoke with residents who told her stories, both big and small, that often referred to the transience of life. These encounters inspired her to write eight new compositions for accordion and (bass) clarinet with titles such as Le départ, Tussenland, Henri, or (the impressive solo accordion piece) Jef.

The compositions are contemplative, with beautifully moving, harmonious colors, in which the accordion, clarinet (and especially the bass clarinet) blend beautifully and are constantly in conversation with one another. In slow, even solemn tempos, they complement each other in rhythm, theme, and soloing. The accordion’s low notes are striking in Wee mij niet (Woe to Me Not), over which the clarinet emits a kind of lament, even leaning towards the (Greek) miroloi. Or in Clair-Obscur, it seems like the low accordion notes split the ground, and let in the light with high notes in a tremolo-like style with warm clarinet colors. The album concludes with Phase 6, a folk-oriented and cheerful dance piece in a 5-beat time, ensuring an optimistic ending for the album.

The CD Verhalen zonder Woorden (Stories Without Words) does indeed contain pieces without lyrics. But through brilliant thematics and passionate playing, these instrumental compositions gain enormous expressive power. Really true music, so listen!
