Het nieuwe album van het trio The North Wind beweegt zich over het Ierse metier, gelardeerd met muziek uit Schotland, Engeland, Bretagne, Noord-Italië, Scandinavië en de Verenigde Staten.

In een overtuigende wervelwind manifesteert het trio The North Wind zich binnen het folk-repertoire. Veelal traditionele stukken zijn met zorg gearrangeerd door de Italiaanse fluitist Michael Balatti, de Ierse violist Tola Custy en de Schotse zanger en snarenspeler Tom Stearn.

Het resultaat is een aangename set. Overwegend traditioneel Iers repertoire, dat met transparante arrangementen (zonder percussie), zeer fris en opgewekt overkomt. Melodieën worden veelal unisono gespeeld, met in de B-gedeeltes tegen-melodieën, die de muziek een fijn melancholisch karakter geeft. De stukken klinken beheerst en worden vakkundig uitgevoerd, met fraaie intonatie en coherent samenspel. Mooi is de flattement. Een fluit-speelwijze waar de melodie wordt voorzien van een lichte trilling/ tremolo, typisch voor de Ierse muziek (en ook voor de Franse Barok-muziek).

Opvallend zijn de vocalen van Stearn. Een opmerkelijk zanger met een heldere en overtuigende stem, die in drie stukken te horen is: The Scarecrow, The Ballina Whalers en Shenandoah. Prachtig zijn de lange melodische lijnen in Future Tents die je moeiteloos meenemen hoog in de lucht en je laten meedeinen op de wind, terwijl de walsen The Humours of Ballyconnell en de afsluitende Valzer in gennaio weer heerlijk speels zijn. The North Wind creëert hiermee een eigen sound, die in een respecterende soberheid de folk een nieuwe kleur geeft.

The new album by the trio The North Wind explores the Irish music scene, interspersed with music influenced from Scotland, England, Brittany, Northern Italy, Scandinavia, and the United States.

The trio The North Wind presents itself in a convincing whirlwind within the folk repertoire. Primarily traditional pieces have been carefully arranged by Italian flautist Michael Balatti, Irish violinist (fiddler) Tola Custy, and Scottish singer and string player Tom Stearn.

The result is a pleasant set. Predominantly traditional Irish repertoire, with transparent arrangements (without percussion), sounds very fresh and cheerful. Melodies are often played in unison, with countermelodies in the B-sections, giving the music a pleasantly melancholic character. The pieces sound controlled and skillfully performed with beautiful intonation and coherent interplay. The flattement is beautiful. This flute playing style features a slight tremolo, typical for Irish music (and also of French Baroque music).

Stearn’s vocals are really striking. A remarkable singer with a clear and convincing voice, he’s featured in three pieces: The Scarecrow, The Ballina Whalers, and Shenandoah. The long melodic lines in Future Tents are beautiful, effortlessly lifting you high into the air and letting you sway with the wind, while the waltzes The Humours of Ballyconnell and the closing Valzer in gennaio are delightfully playful. With this, The North Wind creates a unique sound that, with respectful restraint, gives folk music a new color.
