Het album From Minho to Euphrates is een indrukwekkende CD waarop zangeres Lamia Yared stukken zingt die hun oorsprong hebben op het Iberisch schiereiland en Syrië.

Zangeres (en ûd: Arabische luit)speler Lamia Yared is van Libanese afkomst, maar woont tegenwoordig in Quebec (Canada). Zij is een specialiste van het Arabisch repertoire en zet zich in tot behoud van het muzikaal, cultureel erfgoed dat ligt ten oosten van de Middellandse Zee. Ze bracht al enkele CD’s uit waaronder Chants des Trois Cours uit 2019 en in 2022 het album Ottoman Splendours.

Haar nieuwe CD From Minho to Euphrates nam ze op in samenwerking met de Spaanse musicus Efrén López, die naast ûd-speler ook verantwoordelijk is voor de opname van dit nieuwe album. López is multi-instrumentalist en kreeg bekendheid met zijn legendarische Galicische groep L’Ham de Foc en diverse solo-projecten.

Naast de vocalen van Lamia Yared en de ûd, draailier en vocalen van López horen we de gastmusici Omran Adrah op qanun (plankciter), Tammam Alramadan op ney (fluit), Miriam Encinas Laffitte op viola da gamba en percussionist Behnam Masoumi op tombak en bendir.

Het resultaat is een doorgewinterde bloemlezing van veelal Syrisch werk, waaronder hymne en Sufi-composities uit Aleppo. Maar ook liederen van de Maronite, de Syrische Christenen, die van oorsprong veelal uit Libanon komen. Zoals de hymne Chqal Nourono die opvalt door het vraag en antwoord-spel van de zang met de ney. Ook de Christelijke liederen Santa Maria Amar, Por Nos De Dulta Tirar en Santa Maria, Strela Do Dia uit Spanje hebben een weelderig karakter, waarin Lamia moeiteloos schakelt naar de westerse signatuur. De vocalen van Lamia klinken vol en warm. Ze heeft een fraaie, wendbare en heldere stem waarmee ze vol overtuiging de Arabische en westerse signatuur laat horen. Daarin wordt ze bijgestaan door ney, qanun en de ûd, die (om beurten) de melodie unisono meespelen, strak ondersteund door het percussiewerk op o.a. de zo herkenbare (Iranese) tombak.

Het repertoire op From Minho to Euphrates is een uitgekiende collectie liederen waar op muzikale wijze de Arabische traditie soepel wordt verbonden met de Spaanse en waar vocaliste Lamia Yared als een boegbeeld beide culturen prachtig verbindt.

The album From Minho to Euphrates is an impressive CD on which vocalist Lamia Yared sings pieces originating from the Iberian Peninsula and Syria.

Singer (ûd: Arabic lute) player Lamia Yared is of Lebanese descent, but lives nowadays in Quebec, Canada. She is a specialist in the Arabic repertoire and is committed to preserving the musical and cultural heritage of the eastern Mediterranean. She has already released several CDs, including Chants des Trois Cours from 2019 and in 2022 Ottoman Splendours.

She recorded her new album From Minho to Euphrates in collaboration with the Spanish musician Efrén López, who, in addition to being an ûd player, is also responsible for the recording of this new album. López is a multi-instrumentalist and gained fame with his legendary Galician group L’Ham de Foc and various solo projects.

In addition to Lamia Yared’s vocals and López’s ûd, hurdy-gurdy, and vocals, we hear the guest musicians: Omran Adrah on qanun (plank zither), Tammam Alramadan on ney (flute), Miriam Encinas Laffitte on viola da gamba, and percussionist Behnam Masoumi on tombak and bendir.

The result is a seasoned anthology of primarily Syrian works, including hymns and Sufi compositions from Aleppo. It also includes songs by the Maronites, the Syrian Christians, who originate primarily from Lebanon. One example is the hymn Chqal Nourono, which stands out for its lovely call-and-response interplay with the ney. The Christian songs Santa Maria Amar, Por Nos De Dulta Tirar, and Santa Maria, Strela Do Dia from Spain also have a lush character, in which Lamia effortlessly transitions to a Western signature. Lamia’s vocals are full and warm of timbre. She has a beautiful, agile, and clear voice that convincingly conveys both Arabic and Western influences. She is accompanied by the ney, qanun, and ûd, which (in turns) play the melody in unison, tightly supported by the percussion on the distinctive (Iranian) tombak.

The repertoire on From Minho to Euphrates is a sophisticated collection of songs that seamlessly connects the Arabic tradition with the Spanish, with vocalist Lamia Yared as the absolute figurehead.
