Zangeres Júlia Kozáková brengt met haar album Manuša II op weelderige wijze de Roma-muziek tot leven.

Zangeres Júlia Kozáková is al lang geen onbekende meer binnen de Roma muziek. Ze studeerde (jazz)zang aan de SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) in Londen en aan de Janačkova Akademie in Brno (Tsjechië).

Kozáková heeft bijzondere Roma musici om zich heen verzameld die haar met verve begeleiden op cimbaal, viool, altviool, contrabas en gitaar. De groep speelt een mooie mix tussen traditionele stukken (Slowakije en Centraal-Europa), nieuw werk aangevuld met virtuoze improvisaties. In 2022 kwam haar debuut-album Manuša uit dat nu een fantastisch gevolg krijgt met Manuša II.

Júlia Kozáková heeft een heerlijke, wendbare stem waarmee ze met gemak zingt. Met een licht keelvibrato schuurt haar stem zo nu en dan tegen de melodie aan, prachtig hoorbaar in Soli Rokl’a en Hijaba Labol Khamoro. Deze persoonlijke wijze van zingen past voortreffelijk bij Roma-muziek en voegt een enorme dosis emotie toe aan aan de muziek.

Emotie staat aan de basis van Roma-muziek dat ook mooi tot uiting komt in de improvisaties. Op cimbaal, voortreffelijk in Dumbala Dumba (met prachtig zang-thema), die zeer puntig en strak wordt bespeeld, gevolgd door een pakkende vioolsolo. Fraai zijn de tempo-dubbelingen, zoals in Nane Oda Lavutaris, Soli Rokl’a en het instrumentale Instrumental, waar de band even helemaal los gaat (met spéctaculaire viool- en cimbaalsolo), terwijl in Sas Man Suka de band een knipoog geeft naar een langzame Hot-Club-De-France, met een ferme gitaarsolo.

Op Manuša II spelen voortreffelijke musici enthousiast en bevlogen. Met verve begeleiden ze Kozáková zo, dat traditie, improvisatie en muzikaal vakmanschap intens met elkaar is verweven waarmee wordt bewezen dat de Roma-muziek nog altijd springlevend is!

Singer Júlia Kozáková performs Roma music in a sumptuous way on her album Manuša II.

Singer Júlia Kozáková is no stranger in the Roma music scene. She studied (jazz) singing at the SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) in London and at the Janačkova Academy in Brno, Czech Republic.

Kozáková has gathered exceptional Roma musicians around her who accompany her with verve on cymbal, violin, viola, double bass, and guitar. The group plays a beautiful mix of traditional pieces (Slovak and Central European), new work supplemented with virtuoso improvisations. In 2022, her debut album Manuša was released, which now has a fantastic follow-up with Manuša II.

Júlia Kozáková has a wonderful, agile voice with which she sings with ease. With a light throat vibrato, her voice occasionally brushes against the melody, beautifully audible in Soli Rokl’a or Hijaba Labol Khamoro. This personal style of singing perfectly suits Roma music and adds a tremendous dose of lovely emotion.

Emotion is at the heart of Roma music, which is also beautifully expressed in the improvisations. On cymbalom, superbly in Dumbala Dumba (with a beautiful vocal theme), which is played with great precision, followed by a captivating violin solo. The tempo doublings are beautiful, as in Nane Oda Lavutaris, Soli Rokl’a, and the instrumental piece Instrumental, where the band lets loose (with a spectacular violin and cymbal solo), while in Sas Man Suka, the band gives a nod to a slow Hot-Club-De-France, with a powerful guitar solo.

On Manuša II, excellent musicians play enthusiastically and passionately. They accompany Kozáková with verve, in a way that tradition, improvisation, and musicianship are intensely interwoven, proving that Roma music is still very much alive!
