De Vlaamse duo Thalas bereikt met hun debuut-album As It Comes een enerverende folkhoogte

Thalas is een nieuwe samenwerking, onder een nieuwe, eigen naam van accordeonist Guus Herremans en gitarist Ward Dhoore. Ze kennen elkaar al meer dan 10 jaar en hebben in die tijd veel samengewerkt in het Vlaamse folkcircuit met groepen als Snaarmaarwaar, Spilar en Trio Dhoore.

In al die jaren hebben deze twee bevlogen musici podia gedeeld, ideeën uitgewisseld, gearrangeerd en verfijnd tot spitsvondige muziek, waarvan er nu tien eigen composities op hun debuut-album As It Comes zijn verschenen.

De stukken zijn zeer melodisch en bewegen over (gebruikelijke) harmonieën, waar de thema’s als een verfijnde lijn overheen bewegen. Liederen zonder woorden, met thema’s die aanzetten tot nadenken, die licht contemplatief zijn en waarin je je gedachten de vrije loop kunt laten. Veel composites hebben fraaie B-gedeelten, waarin de instrumentatie wisselt van begeleiding naar solo en vice versa.

Naast de (diatonische) accordeon van Guus en het gitaarspel van Ward, speelt Ward ook mandola, piano, synthesizer en zijn er aan enkele stukken soundscapes toegevoegd die de muziek in een breder perspectief plaatst. Zoals het B-gedeelte van We’re Off of de opening van Tiderframe.

Opvallend hoe goed deze muzikanten hun instrument beheersen en moeiteloos switchen tussen begeleiding en solo’s, waarbij ze elkaar aanvullen en de ruimte geven, uitgevoerd met zorg en aandacht. Guus die zijn accordeon bespeelt met fraaie dynamiek, verfijnde ornamenten als trillers en dubbelslagen en prachtig soleert (Josefien). Ook Ward heeft een fraaie instrumentbeheersing. Hij tokkelt, speelt slag en soleert met opmerkelijke souplesse (Contra Tu).

Thalas is, zo zeggen ze zelf: “Niet zomaar een nieuw hoofdstuk, maar een viering van vriendschap en het plezier om samen iets betekenisvol te creëren”. En zo is het en dat doen ze met toewijding!

The Flemish duo Thalas reaches exciting folk heights with their debut album, As It Comes.

Thalas is a new collaboration, under a new, distinct name, by accordionist Guus Herremans and guitarist Ward Dhoore from Belgium. They have known each other for over 10 years and have collaborated extensively in the Flemish (Belgium) folk scene with groups like Snaarmaarwaar, Spilar, and Trio Dhoore.

Over all those years, these two passionate musicians have shared stages, exchanged ideas, arranged, and refined their pieces into witty music, ten of which have now appeared on their debut album, As It Comes.

The pieces are highly melodic and move along (conventional) harmonies, over which the themes flow like a refined line. Wordless songs with thought-provoking, slightly contemplative themes that allow you to let your thoughts run free. Many compositions feature beautiful B-sections, where the instrumentation switches from accompaniment to solo and vice versa.

Besides Guus’s (diatonic) accordion and Ward’s guitar, Ward also plays mandola, piano, and synthesizer. Soundscapes have been added to some pieces, placing the music in a broader perspective. Examples include the B section of We’re Off or the opening of Tiderframe.

It’s striking how well these musicians master their instruments, effortlessly switching between accompaniment and solos, complementing and giving each other space, performed with care and attention. Guus plays his accordion with beautiful dynamics, using refined ornaments like trills and double strokes, and beautifully solos (Josefien). Ward also possesses a superb use of his instrument. He plucks, strums, and play solos with remarkable flexibility (Contra Tu).

Thalas is, as they themselves say: “Not just a new chapter, but a celebration of friendship and the joy of creating something meaningful together.” And so it is, and they do it with dedication!
