Yes, of course it hurts is het tweede album van de Zwitserse musicus Elian Zeitel. Zangeres, componiste, instrumentaliste, arrangeur en producer die met haar album een vliegende cross-over maakt tussen pop, jazz en klassieke muziek.

Elian Zeitel (1993) werd geboren in Olten, Zwitserland. Ze studeerde zang aan de Hogeschool voor Toegepaste Wetenschappen en Kunsten van Luzern (HSLU) en verbrede deze vocale jazzstudie aan Sibelius Academie in Helsinki. In 2020 kwam haar debuut Honig im Tee op de markt. In april 2025 is daar het 2de album Yes, of course it hurts aan toegevoegd. De inspiratie voor deze CD kwam tot stand tijdens haar zes-maanden-studie in Parijs aan de Cité internationale des Arts.

De muziek van Zeitel heeft vleugels, klinkt fris, is melodisch, met een subtiele dosis weemoed en steeds trefzeker (meerstemmig) gezongen. In vrij korte nummers horen we een vlucht van folk, naar pop, jazz/ blues en klassieke muziek, zingt ze fonetisch (Rosa Geschichten) en in het Engels en Zwitsers. De stukken zijn open gearrangeerd, waarbij het subtiele gebruik van piano (mooie, stuwende en modale solo in Plips, Plops and Plups), gitaar, bas en drums haar vocalen optimaal ondersteunen met minimale middelen.

De stem van Zeitel is helder en transparant. Haar vocalen klinken organisch en zijn nergens gekunsteld. Of ze nu fonetisch (meerstemmig) zingt in Rosa Geschichten, de lange vocale lijnen in Yes, of course it hurts (met fraai strijktrio) of het ongelooflijke mooie Mai, het klinkt allemaal zo warm en vanzelfsprekend. Mai is overigens een lied dat in het Zwitsers wordt gezongen, veel galm heeft in de begeleiding met een glansrijke melodie. Prachtig is ook de ballade You must believe in Spring. Een cross-over jazz-ballad met pop, met hier-en-daar een knipoog naar de hoekige Thelonious Monk-harmonieën.

Het is lang geleden dat ik een cd hoorde waar alles zo mooi op zijn plek valt: waar composities, uitvoeringen en vocale prestaties elkaar zo coherent aanvullen en er uitgebalanceerde muziek ontstaat dat Yes, of course it hurts tot een brilljant album maakt.

Yes, of Course It Hurts is the second album by Swiss musician Elian Zeitel. Singer, composer, instrumentalist, arranger, and producer, her album creates a vibrant crossover between pop, jazz, and classical music.

Elian Zeitel (born 1993) was born in Olten, Switzerland. She studied vocals at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) and furthered her vocal jazz studies at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Her debut album Honig im Tee (Honey in Tea), was released in 2020. Her second album, Yes, of Course It Hurts, was added in April 2025. The inspiration for this CD came during her six-month studies at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.

Zeitel’s music has wings, sounds fresh, is melodic, with a subtle dose of melancholy, and is always sung with precision (in harmony). In quite short numbers we hear a twist from folk to pop, jazz/blues, and classical music, she sings phonetically (Rosa Geschichten) and in English and Swiss. The pieces are openly arranged, with the subtle use of piano (nice, modal solo in Plips, Plops and Plups), guitar, bass, and drums optimally supporting her vocals with minimal resources.

Zeitel’s voice is clear and transparent. Her vocals sound organic and never artificial. Whether she sings polyphony in Rosa Geschichten, the long vocal lines in Yes, of course it hurts (with a lovely string trio), or the incredibly beautiful Mai, it all sounds so warm and natural. Incidentally, Mai is a song sung in Swiss, with plenty of reverb in the accompaniment and a brilliant melody. The ballad You must believe in Spring is also beautiful. A crossover jazz ballad with pop, with occasional nods to the angular harmonies of Thelonious Monk.

It’s been a long time since I heard a CD where everything fell into place so beautifully: where compositions, performances, and vocals complement each other so coherently, creating well-balanced music. This makes Yes, of course it hurts a brilliant album.
