De groep Bonifica Emiliana Veneta Quartetro (BEV4) bewerkte traditionele muziek uit het noorden van Italië (Apennijnen) op organische wijze.

Het Noord-Italiaanse kwintet Bonifica Emiliana Veneta Quattro (BEV) werd opgericht in 1998. Nu 2025 komt de groep, na 20 jaar, met een nieuw album. Het BEV Quattro heeft zich gespecialiseerd op de muziek uit het noorden van Italië, uit de zgn. Quattro-provincie: Alessandria (Piëmont), Genua (Ligurië), Pavia (Lombardije) en Piacenza (Emilia-Romagna). De belangrijkste instrumenten uit deze regio zijn de accordeon (fisarmonica) en de piffero (soort hobo: klinkt als een doedelzak). Het BEV Quattro wordt bijgestaan door vijf gastmusici op diatonische accordeon, viool, elektrische piano, percussie en achtergrondzang.

Het BEV Quattro arrangeerde traditionele stukken maar componeerde ook nieuw werk (in traditioneel dans-metier) in een bezetting met vocalen, mandoloncello (soort grote mandoline), klarinet, viool, contrabas, ghironda (draailier) en percussie. De leden Marco Mainini (zang, piffero en sax) en Alessandro Mottara (percussie) schreven zowel aanvullende teksten als melodieën op bestaande teksten. De groep speelt gezongen werk om-en-om met instrumentale (dans)stukken.

De muziek klinkt organisch en heeft, mede door de melodische (dans)structuur, een duidelijke vorm, waarbij A- en B-gedeeltes elkaar afwisselen. De stem van Marco Mainini is als een boegbeeld van de muziek, net zoals de piffero. Een instrument dat met zijn veeleisende klank erg bepalend is voor de klankkleur. Door het inventief wisselen van instrument-combinaties en de ongedwongen en soepele instrumentbeheersing, creëert de groep een eigen folk-timbre, dat al een (dans)feest op zich is. Zo klinken er het opzwepend en dansbare Lingua madre of Leb, dat er naadloos op aansluit, naast de snelle wals 5&6 en het langzame OXAIA, met prachtige B-gedeeltes.

Het Bonifica Emiliana Veneta Quattro bewijst met dit vijfde album dat de Noord-Italiaanse folk uit de Apennijnen springlevend is. Geen wonder dat het BEV Quattro een van de meest besproken bands is sinds de (Noord-)Italiaanse folkrevival.

The band Bonifica Emiliana Veneta Quartetro (BEV4) organically adapted traditional music from northern Italy (the Apennines).

The Northern Italian quintet Bonifica Emiliana Veneta Quattro was founded in 1998. Now, in 2025 after 20 years, the group is releasing a new album. The BEV Quattro is specialized in music from northern Italy, from the so-called Quattro province: Alessandria (Piedmont), Genoa (Liguria), Pavia (Lombardy), and Piacenza (Emilia-Romagna). The main instruments from this region are the accordion (fisarmonica) and the piffero (a type of oboe that sounds like bagpipes). The BEV Quattro is accompanied by five guest musicians on diatonic accordion, violin, electric piano, percussion, and backing vocals.

The BEV Quattro arranged traditional pieces, but composed also new works (in the traditional dance genre) with vocals, mandoloncello (a type of large mandolin), clarinet, violin, double bass, ghironda (hurdy-gurdy), and percussion. The members Marco Mainini (vocals, piffero and sax) and Alessandro Mottara (percussion) wrote both additional lyrics and melodies based on existing texts. The group performs vocal pieces alternately with instrumental (dance) pieces.

The music sounds organic and, partly due to the melodic (dance) structure, has a clear form, with lovely A and B sections alternating. Marco Mainini’s voice is a figurehead of the music, just like the piffero. An instrument whose demanding sound strongly defines the timbre. Through the inventive exchange of instrument combinations and the effortless and fluid control of the instrument, the group creates a distinctive folk timbre, which is a (dance) celebration in itself. The rousing and danceable Lingua madre or Leb seamlessly follows, alongside the fast waltz 5&6 and the slow OXAIA, with its beautiful B-sections.

With this fifth album, the Bonifica Emiliana Veneta Quattro proves that Northern Italian folk music from the Apennines is alive and well. It’s no wonder the BEV Quattro is one of the most talked-about bands since the (Northern) Italian folk revival.
