Op het nieuwe, innovatie album van Kevin Puts staan de orkestwerken Concerto for Orchestra, Silent night Elegy en Virelai (naar Guillaume de Machaut), schitterend uitgevoerd door het St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (o.l.v. Stéphane Denève).

De CD opent met het Concert for Orchestra dat Kevin Puts componeerde naar aanleiding van de schietpartij in 2022 op een middelbare school in Uvalde (Texas), waar 19 kinderen en twee volwassen omkwamen. Het Concert for Orchestra is een zesdelig werk dat opent met de aangrijpende Hymn for the Hurting. Een compositie met een zeer krachtig, koraal-achtig thema waaruit meteen blijkt dat we hier te maken hebben met een begenadigd componist die de eenvoud niet schuwt. Het Concert is een uitgesproken werk, waar in elk deel gebruik wordt gemaakt van een bijzondere instrumentatie en metier. Zo klinkt er stevig slagwerk (bongo’s en trommels) en forte blazers in Caccia No.1, impressionistische signatuur in Music Box with Arlette (met twinkelende celesta), marimba & xylofoon in Toccata en piano in Sicilienne. Een werk dat start met weer zo’n prachtig dragende thematiek, terwijl in het slotdeel Ecco la Marcia, het beginthema (Hymn for the Hurting) terugkeert in een schitterende en enerverende variatie-vorm, met markante ritmiek.

Het werk Silent Night Elegy is gebaseerd op zijn eerste opera Silent Night, waarin het verhaal wordt verteld over de wapenstilstand op Kerstavond tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Ook hier maakt Kevin Puts vaardig gebruik van de orkestmogelijkheden. Impressionistische signatuur wordt gevolgd door Hoog-Romantische kleuring door het gebruik van een uitgebreid orkest, met opvallende, vitale glissando’s, tegen dissonanten harmonieën en verstilde passages. In bijna 24 minuten voel je oorlogsspanning die tot in finesses is doorgevoerd in de in-elkaar-overlopende delen: The Battle (Het Gevecht), Aftermath and Burial (Nasleep en Begrafenis), The General’s Rage (De Woede van Generaal: die het met deze wapenstilstand niet eens was) en Sleep (Het Slapen).

Het album eindig met het korte werk Virelai (naar Guillaume de Machaut), geïnspireerd op De Machaut’s muziek. De 14de eeuwse, Franse componist die experimenteerde met gecompliceerde ritmiek, dat door Puts is doorgevoerd in deze levendige compositie.

Het St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (o.l.v. Stéphane Denève) speelt Kevin Puts’ composities met een doorgewinterde schoonheid. De werken van deze (opera)componist worden organisch uitgevoerd, waardoor ze stijgen in diepgang. Hierdoor komen de snel wisselende signaturen, pakkende thematiek en sterk variabele crescendi prachtig tot hun recht.

Kevin Puts’s innovative new album features the orchestral works Concerto for Orchestra, Silent Night Elegy, and Virelai (after Guillaume de Machaut), brilliantly performed by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Stéphane Denève).

The CD opens with the Concerto for Orchestra, composed by Kevin Puts in response to the 2022 high school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 children and two adults were killed. The Concerto for Orchestra is a six-movement work that opens with the poignant Hymn for the Hurting. This composition features a powerful, chorale-like theme, immediately revealing that we are dealing with a gifted composer who doesn’t shy away from simplicity. The Concerto is a distinctive work, each movement employing unique instrumentation and craftsmanship. Thus, there is a robust percussion (bongos and drums) and forte winds in Caccia No. 1, an impressionistic signature in Music Box with Arlette (with twinkling celesta), marimba and xylophone in Toccata, and piano in Sicilienne. This work begins with another beautiful, driving theme, while in the final movement, Ecco la Marcia, the opening theme (Hymn for the Hurting) returns in a brilliant and exciting variation form, with striking rhythm.

The work Silent Night Elegy is based on his first opera, Silent Night, which tells the story of the armistice on Christmas Eve during the First World War. Here, too, Kevin Puts skillfully utilizes the orchestral possibilities. An impressionistic signature is followed by High Romantic coloration through the use of an expanded orchestra, with striking, vibrant glissandos, contrasting dissonant harmonies, and tranquil passages. In nearly 24 minutes, you feel the tension of war, meticulously crafted in the interwoven sections: The Battle, Aftermath and Burial, The General’s Rage (Rage because the general did not agree with this armistice), and Sleep.

The album concludes with the short work Virelai (after Guillaume de Machaut), inspired by De Machaut’s music. The 14th-century French composer who experimented with complex rhythms, Puts incorporates these elements into this vibrant composition.

The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Stéphane Denève) plays Kevin Puts’s compositions with seasoned beauty. The works of this (opera) composer are performed so organically that they gain depth, beautifully highlighting the rapidly changing signatures, compelling themes, and highly variable crescendos.
