Het Duitse gezelschap The Mighty Mocambos speelt op hun album A Higher Frequency stevige, groovy funk, met randen van jazz, pop en Afro.

The Mighty Mocambos werd opgericht als jamsessie-band van jonge musici die samen muziek maakten. Dat ging zo voortvarend dat ze in 2006 besloten om hun eigen productie- en platenlabel op te richten. Sindsdien zijn er bijna 20 singles, LP’s en CD’s uitgebracht.

De band bestaat uit negen muzikanten op gitaar, keyboards, basgitaar, drums, blazers-sectie en in enkele nummers zang. De muziek heeft een enorme organische drive die voor een groot gedeelte wordt aangezet door de strakke drumpartijen. Deze worden fraai en beheerst gespeeld en vormen samen met de coherente baspartijen een voortreffelijke, muzikale basis. Hierover klinkt de blazerssectie, die prachtig, ritmisch simultaan, één timbre vormt, één kleur. De gitaar en de keyboards (piano & orgel) mengen zich in als muzikaal katalysator die met riffs en akkoorden het geheel aan elkaar smelt.

De band klinkt heerlijk beheerst en toch vurig en opzwepend, met korte solo’s op piano, trombone en gitaar in Open the Gate, orgel en fluit in Spinning en sax, gitaar en fluit in Sparks of Joy. De instrumentale stukken spreken het meest tot de verbeelding, waarin de band het best tot zijn recht komt, met breaks, accenten, riffs en pakkende thematiek. De wat gepolijste vocale stukken (op Can’t Stop This Fire na) brengen het geheel helaas naar een wat marginaler niveau.

On their album A Higher Frequency, the German band The Mighty Mocambos plays a robust, groovy funk with hints of jazz, pop, and Afro.

The Mighty Mocambos was founded as a jam session band of young musicians making music together. This progressed so well that in 2006 they decided to establish their own production and record label. Since then, they have released nearly 20 singles, LPs, and CDs.

The band consists of nine musicians on guitar, keyboards, bass, drums, a horn section, and vocals on several tracks. The music has a tremendous organic drive, largely fueled by the tight drum parts. These are played beautifully and controlled, and together with the coherent bass lines, it forms an excellent musical foundation. Over this, the horn section sounds, beautifully and rhythmically simultaneous, forming a single timbre, a single color. The guitar and keyboards (piano & organ) blend as musical catalysts, fusing the whole thing together with riffs and chords.

The band sounds wonderfully controlled yet fiery and exhilarating, with short solos on piano, trombone, and guitar in Open the Gate, organ and flute in Spinning, and sax, guitar, and flute in Sparks of Joy. The instrumental pieces are the most evocative, showcasing the band’s full potential with lovely breaks, accents, riffs, and catchy themes. The somewhat polished vocal parts (except for Can’t Stop This Fire) unfortunately brings the music to a somewhat marginal level.
