Zanger Guillaume Lopez en diatonisch accordeonist Clèment Rousse brengen op hun album Thouxazun E Convits op schitterende wijze de Zuid-Franse Occitanische vocale traditie tot leven.

Occitanië is het zuidelijk deel van Frankrijk. Een gebied waar van origine één-stemmige liederen vandaan komen. Eeuwenoude liederen die liggen opgeslagen in het collectief geheugen van de Fransen. Liederen die op bijzondere wijze meerstemmig werden vertaald door o.a. Manu Theron met zijn groepen Gache Empega, Lo Cor de Plana en Polifonic System.

Zanger Guillaume Lopez ‘beperkt’ zich voor een gedeelte tot de eenstemmige zang. Hij is van Spaanse afkomst, studeerde klassiek saxofoon en heeft zich nu gespecialiseerd in dwarsfluit en traditionele zang en improvisatie, waarbij hij diverse stijlen mixt en matcht. Zijn medemuzikant Clément Rousse speelt accordeon, doedelzak en viool. Ze worden bijgestaan door diverse gastmusici op percussie, accordeon en de innemende zang van Emilie Manescau, die opvalt in de meerstemmigheid in Un Jour dans la Chaleur d’Eté en Lo Bon Vin, waarbij de laatste compositie avontuurlijk is gearrangeerd. Tegen de strakke en ferme vocalen van Lopez, klinkt er bevlogen accordeonspel van Rousse, tin whistle en de cello van Noé Bazoge. Wonderlijk mooi. Deze meerstemmigheid wordt verder uitgewerkt in Ne Vetez pas, dat qua stijl prachtig aansluit bij Lo Cor de la Plana uit Marseille.

Lopez en Rousse componeerden de meeste werken op Thouxazun E Convits. Op geslaagde wijze variëren ze in hun muziek door het gebruik van uitgebreide harmonieën, improvisaties (Ce Matin), bijzondere wendingen zoals in Dins mon Quartier of de Oriëntaalse kleuren in Le Prince de Monferran. Opvallend virtuoos is Minato, waarbij vocalen en accordeon excelleren in snelheid en souplesse, met fraaie wendingen en een chromatisch thema in het slot, bijgestaan door percussionst Sébastian Gosbert. Bijzonder is ook het lied Avans, dat door middel van herhalende akkoorden een vrolijk, maar ook een heerlijk weemoedig karakter heeft.

Maar bovenal: deze twee musici hebben een brede muzikale horizon, waarbij vakkundige vocale- en instrumentbeheersing onontbeerlijk is, voor het overtuigend spelen van deze traditioneel georiënteerde muziek.

Singer Guillaume Lopez and diatonic accordionist Clèment Rousse brilliantly bring the southern French Occitanie vocal tradition to life on their album Thouxazun E Convits.

Occitanie is the southern part of France, a region where monophonic songs originate. Centuries-old songs are enshrined in the collective memory of the French. Songs that have been uniquely translated into polyphonic form by artists like Manu Theron with his groups Gache Empega, Lo Cor de Plana, and Polifonic System.

Singer Guillaume Lopez partially “limits” himself to monophonic singing. He is of Spanish descent, studied classical saxophone, and has now specialized in flute, traditional singing, and improvisation, mixing and matching various styles. His fellow musician Clément Rousse plays accordion, bagpipes, and violin. They are accompanied by various guest musicians on percussion, accordion, and the captivating vocals of Emilie Manescau, who stands out in the polyphony of Un Jour dans la Chaleur d’Eté and Lo Bon Vin, the latter composition being adventurously arranged. Against Lopez’s tight and firm vocals, Rousse’s impassioned accordion playing, tin whistle, and Noé Bazoge’s cello resonate. Wonderfully beautiful. This polyphony is further developed in Ne Vetez pas, which stylistically complements Marseille’s Lo Cor de la Plana.

Lopez and Rousse composed most of their works on Thouxaizun E Convits. They successfully vary their music through the use of extended harmonies, improvisations (Ce Matin), and unusual twists, such as in Dins mon Quartier or the oriental colors in Le Prince de Monferran. Minato is a remarkably virtuosic piece, with vocals and accordion excelling in speed and flexibility, featuring beautiful turns and a chromatic theme in the finale, lovely accompanied by percussionist Sébastian Gosbert. The song Avans is also exceptional in a way, with its repeating chords creating a cheerful yet delightfully melancholic atmosphere.

But above all, these two musicians have a broad musical horizon, where expert vocal and instrumental mastery is indispensable when convincingly playing this traditionally oriented music.
