Het collectief Muva laat op hun album Yum Cháak een cross-over mix horen van licht esoterische muziek, in een breed scala aan muzikale invloeden.

Sommige albums bereiken mij pas jaren later na de release. Dat is op zich niet erg, want goede muziek is jaren later ook nog interessant. Zo ook het album Yum Cháak van de groep Muva uit Mexico-Stad, dat uitkwam in 2021.
Met het album Yum Cháak duikt de groep in de religie van de Maya’s. Yum Cháak is de God-van-de-regen die je de kracht geeft om onopgeloste pijn en spijt weg te wassen en te vergeten. Hiermee eert de groep het Maya-erfgoed om zo goden en legendes levend te houden en deze te vertalen naar hun muziek.
De composities bewegen zich over een brede scheidslijn van progressieve rock, jazz, pop, electronica en wereldmuziek. De arrangementen zijn ruim van opzet, maar hebben een fijne, overzichtelijke thematiek die orkestraal wordt uitgewerkt, met veel gebruik van galm, brede percussie-partijen (drums), stevige gitaren, doedelzak, fluiten, viool (strijkers), piano, blazers (saxofoon, klarinet), electronica en zang, dit alles gespeeld door zo’n 20 musici. Hier en daar zijn de partijen dubbel gelaagd zoals bijvoorbeeld in het middendeel Nahuani, waar een lange vioolpartij wordt gelardeerd met een stevige rockgitaarrif (net zoals in Yatere, waar de klarinet het opneemt tegen gitaarrock, gevolgd door strijkers). Alhoewel de vocalen worden gebruikt als een toegevoegd instrument, zijn ze overbodig en halen ze de luisteraar uit een innerlijk muzikaal beeld waar de zang weinig aan toevoegt. Prachtig is de CD-opener Yeti U Pixan Masada. Een intrigerende 7-tels compositie waar in de klarinet de oosterse klank herbergt die van Turkije, naar Griekenland en Armenië kleurt. Bijzonder is ook de doedelzak in Taming Kelpies, die de muziek een fijne folk-signatuur geeft, ondersteund door prachtige keelzang. Een wonderschone combinatie.
Het album sluit af met het titelstuk Yum Cháak. Een magische 3-tels compositie, met een open arrangement. Het stuk is een aaneenschakeling van samples, elektronica en instrumenten waarin gitaar, gesproken stemmen en klarinet de muziek ver boven het gemiddelde uittilt.

On their album Yum Cháak, the Muva collective presents a crossover mix of slightly esoteric music, encompassing a wide range of musical influences.
Some albums only reach me years after their release. That’s not a problem at all, because good music is still interesting years later. This is also the case with the album Yum Cháak by the Mexico City group Muva, released in 2021.
With their album Yum Cháak, the group delves into Mayan religion. Yum Cháak is the rain god who gives you the power to wash away and forget unresolved pain and regret. With this, the group honors the Mayan heritage, keeping gods and legends alive and translating them into their music.
The music spans a broad spectrum of progressive rock, jazz, pop, electronica, and world music. The arrangements are spacious in scope, yet possess a pleasant, well-organized theme that is developed orchestrally, with extensive use of reverb, broad percussion (drums), robust guitars, bagpipes, flutes, violin (strings), piano, wind instruments (saxophone, clarinet), electronics, and vocals, all performed by some 20 musicians. Here and there, the parts are double-layered, as in the middle section of Nahuani, where a long violin part is interspersed with a robust rock guitar riff (similar in the piece Yatere, where the clarinet takes on guitar rock, followed by lovely strings). Although the vocals are used as a kind of supplementary instrument, they are superfluous and pull the listener out of an inner musical landscape to which the vocals add little. The CD opener Yeti U Pixan Masada, is beautiful. An intriguing 7-beat composition in which the clarinet touches the oriental sound that colors from Turkey to Greece and Armenia. The bagpipes in Taming Kelpies are also remarkable, giving the music a delicate folk signature, supported by beautiful throat singing. A wonderful combination.
The album concludes with the title piece, Yum Cháak. A magical three-beat composition with an open arrangement. The piece is a series of samples, electronics, and instruments, with guitar, spoken voices, and clarinet elevating the music far beyond the average.
