Het vierde album van Ledbetter is een aaneenschakeling van nieuw gecomponeerd werk dat een organische cross-over is van Caribische (latin)jazz, funk en pop. Hij wordt bijgestaan door drummer Larnell Lewis (van de mega-band Snarky Puppy) en de zessnarige basgitarist Rich Brown (o.a. Steve Colemans Five Elements en saxofonist Rudresh Mahanthappa).

Jeremy Ledbetter is een bevlogen pianist die een goed gevoel heeft voor pakkende thema’s (zoals het arpeggio-thema in Wonder) die hij verwerkt in doortimmerde arrangementen, gelardeerd met fraaie en onverwachte breaks, ritme-verschuivingen en unisono partijen met bas en drums. Zijn spel heeft een vlijmscherpe timing die, qua stijl, aansluit bij het werk van Michael Camillo, latin-jazzpianist uit de Dominicaanse Republiek (zoals in Song of the river).

Geweldig hoe het beweeglijke basspel van Brown (schitterende solo in Song of the river en The stars in her sky) en de ritmische drums (met heerlijke ghostnotes) van Lewis (meesterlijke solo in Gravity en Port of Spain) zich moeiteloos mengen met het spel van Ledbetter. Als een puzzel grijpen de partijen in elkaar en vormen een compacte eenheid. Ondanks de vele noten, zowel in thema als in solo’s (hier en daar modaal), behoudt de muziek een rijke melodische balans die een breed muzikaal verhaal biedt. Elke compositie is een epos waarin thema’s, harmonieën, maatwisselingen, breaks en unisono-partijen elkaar zo vanzelfsprekend afwisselen, dat je goed moet opletten om niets te missen. Daar is natuurlijk niks mis mee en geeft je een reden om het album nog een keer te beluisteren, want dat is het meer dan waard.

Musician Jeremy Ledbetter is a virtuoso pianist from Toronto who is turning the world upside down with his new album, Gravity.

Ledbetter’s fourth album is a series of newly composed works that are an organic crossover of Caribbean (Latin) jazz, funk, and pop. He is accompanied by drummer Larnell Lewis (of the mega-band Snarky Puppy) and six-string bassist Rich Brown (of Steve Coleman’s Five Elements and saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, among others).

Jeremy Ledbetter is an impassioned pianist with a keen eye for catchy themes (like the arpeggio theme in Wonder), which he incorporates into captivating arrangements, interspersed with beautiful and unexpected breaks, rhythm shifts, and unison parts with bass and drums. His playing has a razor-sharp timing that, stylistically, resonates with the work of Michael Camillo, a latin-jazz pianist from the Dominican Republic (as in Song of the River).

It’s amazing how Brown’s agile bass playing (brilliant solo in Song of the River and The Stars in Her Sky) and Lewis’s rhythmic drums, with delightful ghost notes (masterful solo in Gravity and Port of Spain), blend effortlessly with Ledbetter’s playing. Like a puzzle, the parts interlock and creates compact music. Despite the many notes, both in theme’s and solos (sometimes modal), the music maintains a rich melodic balance that offers a broad musical narrative. Each composition is an epic in which themes, harmonies, time signatures, breaks, and unison parts alternate so naturally that you have to pay close attention not to miss anything. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, and it gives you a reason to listen to the album again, because it’s more than worth it.
