A Prayer of Deliverance (Een Gebed om Bevrijding) is de titel van het nieuwe album van het vocaal ensemble Tenebrae met solisten, onder leiding van Nigel Short.

Een van de beste Britse professionele, vocale ensembles is Tenebrae uit Londen. Werd in 2001 opgericht door Barbara Pollock en Nigel Short, jarenlang vocalist in het King Singers ensemble. Het repertoire bestaat uit bewerkingen van vocale stukken (profaan en sacraal) uit de 16de tot de 20ste eeuw. In 2006 gaf het koor concerten in kerken langs de Camino, de pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostela in Noord-Spanje, met het werk Path of Miracles van Joby Talbot. Een indrukwekkende compositie waarin de voor- en tegenslagen tijdens de pelgrimsroute muzikaal zijn vertaald tot imposante vocale stukken.

Op het nieuwste album staat het werk A Prayer of Deliverance centraal. Een compositie die de Amerikaanse componist Joel Thompson schreef tijdens de pandemie, waarin de sociale en politieke onrust zich uit in prangende en dissonante harmonieën, onverwachte wendingen, schitterende solistische fragmenten, ingebed in epische crescendo’s, dynamisch en bevlogen uitgevoerd door Tenebrae en o.a. de solisten Emma Walshe (sopraan), Rosanna Wicks (sopraan), Victoria Meteyard (sopraan), Hannah Cooke (alt), Anna Semple (alt), Tom Robson (tenor), Nicholas Madden (tenor), Jeremy Budd (tenor), Jack Granby (tenor), Joseph Edwards (bariton), Gabriel Crouch (bas) en Jimmy Holliday (bas).

De tweede helft van het album is gewijd aan de compositie Requiem, gecomponeerd door Herbert Howells. Een adembenemend en schitterend zes-delig werk dat Howells componeerde en nu de nagedachtenis is voor de tragische dood van zijn 9-jarige zoon Michael, die 3 jaar eerder voor de voltooing overleed in 1935. Het stuk is een aaneenschakeling van polyfone en solistische passages met een indrukwekkend organisch verloop.

Het album opent met The Evening-Watch van Gustav Holst, dat na de premiere in 1925 zijn muzikale glans niet heeft verloren. Daarnaast staan er werken op van McDowall (met oor-strelende sopraan-solo), Francis Pott’s The Spul Of the Righteous, met een aaneenschakeling van innemende harmonieën. Iets wat ook terughoren in And the Swallow van Caroline Shaw, die Psalm 84 met innige harmonieën toonzette. Verder werken van Rodney Bennet, John Taverner (het verstilde Song for Athene) en natuurlijk een werk van de Britse componist Ralph Vaughan Williams, met als afsluiter Evening Prayer van Joanna Marsh, gebaseerd op Abendlied van de (orgel)componist Josef G. Weinberger uit Liechtenstein.

Op het album A Prayer of Deliverance staat een schitterende collectie a capella werken waarin de kwaliteit van Tenebrae tot uiting komt in een prachtige samenklank, waarin de stemmen warm klinken en mêleren tot één kleur, uitgebreid met solisten die zich moeiteloos mengen in het sympathieke timbre van dit bijzondere ensemble.

A Prayer of Deliverance is the title of the new album by the vocal ensemble Tenebrae featuring soloists and conducted by Nigel Short.

Tenebrae from London is one of the finest British professional vocal ensembles. In 2001 it was founded by Barbara Pollock and Nigel Short, longtime vocalist with the King Singers ensemble. Their repertoire consists of arrangements of vocal pieces (profane and sacred) from the 16th to the 20th century. In 2006, the choir gave concerts in churches along the Camino, the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain, performing Joby Talbot’s Path of Miracles. This impressive composition translates the ups and downs of the pilgrimage into powerful vocal pieces.

The latest album centers on the work A Prayer of Deliverance. A composition written by American composer Joel Thompson during the pandemic, in which social and political unrest is expressed in poignant and dissonant harmonies, unexpected twists, and dazzling solo fragments, embedded in epic crescendos, dynamically and passionately performed by Tenebrae and the soloists Emma Walshe (soprano), Victoria Meteyard (soprano), Hannah Cooke (alto), Jeremy Budd (tenor), Nicholas Madden (tenor), Joseph Edwards (baritone), Gabriel Crouch (bass) and Jimmy Holliday (bass). Added with the soloists Rosanna Wicks (soprano), Anna Semple (alto), Tom Robson (tenor) and Jack Granby (tenor).

On the second half of the album there’s the composition Requiem, composed by Herbert Howells. A breathtaking and magnificent six-movement work, now a commemoration of the tragic death of his nine-year-old son Michael, who died three years earlier (than the completion) in 1935. The piece is a series of polyphonic and solo passages with an impressively organic progression.

The album opens with Gustav Holst’s The Evening-Watch, which has not lost its musical brilliance since its premiere in 1925. The CD also features works by McDowall (featuring a captivating soprano solo) and Francis Pott’s The Souls of the Righteous, with a series of captivating harmonies. This is also heard in Caroline Shaw’s And the Swallow, which set Psalm 84 to heartfelt harmonies. Works by Rodney Bennet, John Taverner (the tranquil Song for Athene), and of course a work by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, culminating in Evening Prayer by Joanna Marsh, based on the Abendlied by the Liechtenstein (organ) composer Josef G. Weinberger.

The album A Prayer of Deliverance features a magnificent collection of a cappella works in which Tenebrae’s quality is expressed in a beautiful harmony. Voices with a warm sound and blending into a unified color, complemented by soloists who effortlessly blend into the engaging timbre of this remarkable ensemble.
