Het kwintet Paper Window brengt met hun debuut-CD Through the eye of the lark een ode aan de sprookjes en vertellingen van de Deense schrijver Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875).

De composities bewegen op de scheidslijn van folk, rock, pop en jazz/geïmproviseerde muziek. De stukken werden geschreven door pianiste en zangeres Pau Li Liem en gitariste en zangeres Wytske Gratama en worden gezongen in het engels. Hun lucide vocalen matchen fraai en hebben een opvallend gelijk timbre die, mede door de perfecte timing, samenvalt tot een fraaie eenheid. Ze worden ondersteund door elektrisch gitarist Yuri Rhodenborgh, Marijn van de Ven op contrabas en drummer Guy Salamon. Drie musici die met een gedegen improvisatorische achtergrond de muziek van Paper Window een jazz- en geïmproviseerde touch meegeven

De composities zijn gebaseerde op de sprookjes van Hans Christian Andersen, die er zo’n 150 schreef. Li Liem en Gratama kozen voor minder bekend repertoire van de Deense schrijver, waaronder Het Madeliefje, De laatste droom van de oude eik, De Talisman, De vetkaars en de De Boze Prins en bewerkten deze tot eigentijds werk.

De aanpak is robuust (The Jumpers), oprecht en levert intelligente composities op. De verzorgde 2-stemmigheid (met veel galm) is het boegbeeld van de muziek, die verder opvalt door uitgekiend en afwisselend instrument-gebruik, onverwachte harmonieën (The Bell en Little Ida’s Flowers), verfijnde arrangementen (prachtig in The Lark) en een onregelmatige maatsoort (7-tels) in The Jumpers.

Through the eye of the lark is een artistiek debuut-album en spreekt tot de verbeelding, waardoor het sprookje Paper Window is uitgegroeid tot een waargebeurd verhaal.

The quintet Paper Window released their debut CD Through the eye of the lark, in which they pay a tribute to the fairy tales and stories of the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875).

The compositions move on the cross line between folk, rock, pop and jazz/improvised music. The pieces were written by pianist and singer Pau Li Liem and guitarist and singer Wytske Gratama and are sung in English. Their lucid vocals match beautifully and have a remarkably similar timbre that, partly due to the perfect timing, comes together into a beautiful unity. They are supported by electric guitarist Yuri Rhodenborgh, Marijn van de Ven on double bass and drummer Guy Salamon. Three musicians who, with a solid improvisational background, give the music of Paper Window a jazz and improvised touch

The compositions are based on the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen, who wrote about 150 of them. Li Liem and Gratama chose for lesser-known repertoire by the Danish writer, including The Daisy, The Last Dream of the Old Oak, The Talisman, The Tallow Candle and The Evil Prince and adapted these works in a contemporary way.

The approach of their music is robust (The Jumpers), sincere and produces intelligent compositions. The well-groomed 2-part harmony (with lots of reverb) is the figurehead of the music, which is further noticeable by the sophisticated and changing use of instruments, unexpected harmonies (The Bell and Little Ida’s Flowers), refined arrangements (beautiful in The Lark) and an irregular time signature (7-beats) in The Jumpers.

Through the eye of the lark is an artistic debut album and appeals to the imagination, making the fairy tale Paper Window become a true story.
