De zussen Cassie en Maggie MacDonald draaien al heel wat jaren mee binnen het Keltisch repertoire. Hun nieuwste album Gold and Coal is een terug- en vooruitblik vanuit Nova Scotia in Canada.

De muziek op het nieuwe album Gold and Coal van het Canadese duo Cassie en Maggie MacDonald is geen folk, want daar is het te rocky voor, maar het is ook geen rock want daar is het weer te folky voor. De muziek zit precies in het midden, soms hellend naar links en dan weer naar rechts.
Maggie zingt de leadvocals en speelt piano, gitaar en keyboards en Cassie zingt de harmonie-vocalen en speelt viool. Ze worden bijgestaan door zo’n tien gastmusici op drums, bodhran (handtrommel), bas, gitaar en banjo.
Op dit vijfde album Gold and Coal (Goud en kolen) draait het om de metafoor waar nieuw- (Gold) en oud (Coal) repertoire elkaar omhelst en wordt getransformeerd tot hedendaagse muziek. Waar de traditie zich moeiteloos mengt in nieuwe en moderne arrangementen.
Het resultaat is een aaneenschakeling van traditionele teksten, voorzien van (nieuwe) pakkende melodieën, die zich soepel vlijen binnen het folk-idioom. In het begeleidende boekje wordt uitleg gegeven waar de teksten vandaan komen en waarom de MacDonalds ze hebben gekozen. Zo is Dear Imogene een tekst die gebaseerd is op een gedicht van Pluck Marriot (1862): een ode aan je dromen, die je moet blijven volgen, ook al is je omgeving het daar soms niet mee eens. En is Fool’s Gold een waarschuwing dat niet alles-wat-schittert goud hoeft te zijn: pas op!
De vocalen van Cassie en Maggie zijn wonderschoon, klinken wendbaar en mêleren tot één warme kleur. De muziek is krachtig, met prachtige melodieën, zoals het adembenemende The Old Miner, het fragiele Blue Monday, de stuwende melodie in Fool’s Gold of de stevige dansfolk-tunes The Big Hewer en het bruisende Dougie’s Set. Alle stukken klinken dynamisch, met uitgekiende instrumentkeuze en zijn met zorg en vakkennis gearrangeerd. Maar wat nog het meest opvalt is de toewijding en het enthousiasme dat door alle composities heen straalt en het album een extra glans bezorgd.

The sisters Cassie and Maggie MacDonald have been playing within the Celtic repertoire for many years. Their latest album Gold and Coal is a retrospective and a look ahead from Nova Scotia in Canada.
The music is not folk, because it is too rocky for that, but it is also not rock because it is too folky for that. The music is exactly in the middle, sometimes leaning to the left and then to the right.
Maggie sings the lead vocals and plays piano, guitar and keyboards and Cassie sings the harmony vocals and plays violin. They are supported by about ten guest musicians on drums, bodhran (hand drum), bass, guitar and banjo.
This fifth album Gold and Coal is about the metaphor where new (Gold) and old (Coal) repertoire embrace each other and are transformed into contemporary music. Where tradition effortlessly blends with new and modern arrangements.
The result is a series of traditional lyrics, provided with (new) catchy melodies, that fit smoothly within the folk idiom. The accompanying booklet explains where the lyrics come from and why the MacDonalds chose them. For example, Dear Imogene is a text based on a poem by Pluck Marriot (1862): an ode to your dreams, which you should continue to follow, even if your environment sometimes disagrees. And Fool’s Gold is a warning that not everything that glitters has to be gold: watch out!
The vocals of Cassie and Maggie are beautiful, sound agile and blend into one warm color. The music is powerful, with beautiful melodies, such as the breathtaking The Old Miner, the fragile Blue Monday, the driving melody in Fool’s Gold or the sturdy dance folk tunes The Big Hewer and the vibrant Dougie’s Set. All the pieces sound dynamic, with a sophisticated choice of instruments and are arranged with care and expertise. But what is most striking is the dedication and enthusiasm which shines trough al the compositions and gives the album an extra shine.
