De Finse band FRIGG bestaat 25 jaar en dan is het natuurlijk feest. Niet onverdiend, want de groep is al jarenlang een toonaangevend folk-(strijk)orkest. Ook op Dreamscapes laat de groep een verrassende, innovatieve mix horen van folk-georienteerde stukken.

De band FRIGG wordt opgericht in februari 2000, als een groep jonge, fanatieke folkliefhebbers elkaar ontmoet in Kaustinen Pelimannitalo. Op vier violen, strijkers en een contrabas werden nieuwe composities ingestudeerd en demo-tapes opgenomen. De band groeide uit tot een baanbrekend orkest waar folk(dansen) worden gelardeerd met bluegrass, Balkanritmes en klassieke signaturen.

Door de jaren heen werkte FRIGG met veel musici samen, nam 12 albums op en gaf meer dan duizend concerten wereldwijd. Op het jubileumalbum Dreamscapes bestaat de bezetting uit strijkers: violen, contrabas, gitaar/mandoline en citer, aangevuld met gastmusici op cello, percussie en sounddesign.

De groep blijft zoeken naar muzikale raakvlakken, nieuwe cross-overs en mengvormen die werkelijk bijzondere en fantastische muziek oplevert. Het album opent met Daydream – 1 Brigde. Inderdaad, met serene vioolklanken maak je een sprongetje van de reeële- naar de muzikale FRIGG-wereld. De stukken klinken hecht, compact en worden voortreffelijk en met souplesse uitgevoerd. De gelaagde arrangementen van Västkusten Twits en Lupaus tegen Valsette (een wals die begint in 5-tels maat) die met een perpetuum melodie je even de adem ontneemt. Deze stukken sluiten mooi aan bij de zeer melodieuze Ilon Haikeus (hoogtepunt van de CD!) en het hechte Lupuas. Indrukwekkend mooi allemaal. Daarna brengt FRIGG je weer terug naar de realiteit met het filmische Game of FRIGG, Troll’s Twilight en Vittra Sqaure Dance dat zelfs kenmerken heeft van de opzwepende Braziliaanse choro.

Het sextet FRIGG speelt een ingenieuze mengvorm van diverse stijlen waar de Finse folk nooit ver weg is. Dat kan ook bijna niet anders want deze musici spelen geen Finse folk, ze zíj́n het. De folk zit zo in de cultuur verankerd, dat krijg je er niet meer uit en dat is maar goed ook!

The Finnish band FRIGG is celebrating its 25th anniversary. And of course it’s time to celebrate, because the group has been a leading folk (string) orchestra for years. On Dreamscapes, the band presents again a surprising, innovative mix of folk-oriented pieces.

FRIGG was founded in February 2000, when a group of young, fanatical folk lovers met in Kaustinen Pelimannitalo. New compositions were rehearsed and demo tapes were recorded on four violins, strings and a double bass. The band grew into a groundbreaking orchestra where folk (dances) are interspersed with bluegrass, Balkan rhythms and classical signatures.

Over the years, FRIGG has worked with many musicians, recorded 12 albums and given more than a thousand concerts worldwide. On their anniversary album Dreamscapes, the line-up consists of strings: violins, double bass, guitar/mandolin and zither, supplemented by guest musicians on cello, percussion and sound design.

The band continues to search for musical common ground, new crossovers and hybrid forms that produce truly special and fantastic music. The album opens with Daydream – 1 Brigde. Indeed, with serene violin sounds you make a leap from the real world to the musical FRIGG world. The pieces sound tight, compact and are performed excellently and with flexibility. The layered arrangements of Västkusten Twits and Lupaus against Valsette (a waltz that starts in 5-beat time) that takes your breath away with a lovely kind of perpetuum melody. These pieces fit in nicely with the very melodious Ilon Haikeus (highlight of the CD!) and the tight Lupuas. Impressively beautiful music. FRIGG brings you back to reality with the cinematic Game of FRIGG, Troll’s Twilight and the rhythmic Vittra Square Dance that even has characteristics of the rousing Brazilian choro.

The sextet FRIGG plays an ingenious mix of different styles where Finnish folk is never far away. And that is almost inevitable because these musicians do not play Finnish folk, they a áre it. Folk is so embedded in the culture, you can’t get it out of it and that’s a good thing!
