Einde 2024 verscheen Zanzibara 11 – Congo in Dar: Dance No Sweat van de Zanzibara-serie. Een CD-serie met Swahili-muziek uit de Oost-Afrikaanse kuststeden Lamu en Mombasa (Kenia), de eilanden Zanzibar en de Comoren en de steden Tanga en Dar es Salaam (Tanzania).

Deze CD bevat archiefopnamen uit de jaren 1982-1986. Dar es Salaam had destijds een levendige live muziekscene waar roulerend zo’n 20 bands professioneel optraden. In de jaren ’60 en ’70 kwamen er ook bands uit buurland Congo naar de kuststeden, om op te treden in de duurdere hotels. Twee van deze groepen zijn nu te horen op deel 11 Congo in Dar: Dance No Sweat: afwisselend Orchestra Maquis du Zaire en Orchestra Safari Sound.

Beiden groepen ontwikkelden de Congolese soukous. Een stijl die een Afrikaanse variant is van de Cubaanse son die overwaaide in de jaren ’60 en zich dus ontwikkelde tot de soukous. Een zeer ritmische, opzwepende stijl die razend populair werd. In de Oost-Afrikaanse kuststeden van Tanzania en Kenia ontwikkelde deze stijl zich tot de muziki wa dansi (Swahili voor muziek om op te dansen). Een iets langzamere en melodieuzere stijl die zijn opgewektheid en opzwepende ritmiek heeft behouden.

Zanzibara 11 – Congo in Dar: Dance No Sweat biedt een uitgelezen collectie van de muziki wa dansi. Veel gitaarwerk met korte melodieuze thema’s, strakke blazers, fraaie syncopische basloopjes en verrukkelijke (harmonische) voor- en nazang, aangevuld met percussie. Met deze heerlijk, levendige en optimistische muziek is het gemakkelijk om je voor te stellen dat je een hele nacht danst in een van de nachtclubs van Dar es Salaam, inderdaad: Dance No Sweat.

At the end of 2024, Zanzibara 11 – Congo in Dar: Dance No Sweat of the Zanzibara series was released. A CD series with Swahili music from the East African coastal cities of Lamu and Mombasa (Kenya), the islands of Zanzibar and the Comoros and the city’s Tanga and Dar es Salaam (Tanzania).

This CD contains archive recordings from the years 1982-1986. At the time, Dar es Salaam had a lively live music scene where around 20 professional bands variously performed. In the 1960s and 1970s, bands from neighboring Congo also came to the coastal cities to perform in the more expensive hotels. Two of these groups can now be heard on part 11 Congo in Dar: Dance No Sweat: alternately Orchestra Maquis du Zaire and Orchestra Safari Sound.

Both bands developed the Congolese soukous. A style that is an African variant of the Cuban son that came over in the 1960s and thus developed into the soukous. A very rhythmic, rousing style that became extremely popular. In the East African coastal cities of Tanzania and Kenya, this style developed into the muziki wa dansi (Swahili for music to dance to). A somewhat slower and more melodic style that has retained its cheerfulness and rousing rhythm.

Zanzibara 11 Congo in Dar: Dance No Sweat offers a fine collection of the muziki wa dansi. Lots of guitar work with short melodic themes, tight horns, beautiful syncopated bass lines and delightful (harmonic) call- and respond-singing, supplemented by percussion. With this wonderful, lively and optimistic music it is easy to imagine yourself dancing all night long in one of the nightclubs of Dar es Salaam, indeed: Dance No Sweat.
