Werkelijk schitterend debuut-samenwerkings-album The First at Last van altsaxofonist Jasper Staps en pianist Rembrandt Frerichs samen met bassist Matheus Nicolaiewsky en drummer Mitchel Damen.

Alhoewel Rembrandt Frerichs en Jasper Staps elkaar al meer dan 25 jaar kennen en samen regelmatig het podium deelden, duurde het tot eind 2023 voordat er een samenwerkingsalbum verscheen. Dat heeft best lang geduurd, maar dan heb je ook wat.
The First at Last is een met zorg gemaakt album waarop vier musici de liefde delen voor krachtige thema’s, nieuwe & innovatieve harmonieën en warme timing tegen een blauwdruk van een decennia oude swing-traditie.
Het album opent met Carice. Een half-time compositie van Staps & Frerichs waarop meteen duidelijk hoorbaar is dat dit quartet een eenheid uitstraalt, zowel solistisch als begeleidend. Naast klassiekers als Isfahan (Ellington/Strayhorn), Easy to Love (Porter), Jerome Kern’s The Song is You en Time and Again (Telkens weer) van Ruud Bos staat er ook eigen werk van Frerichs op The First at Last, zoals de innemende compositie Leaves of Green. Met een gospel-knipoog-metier naar het werk van Keith Jarrett, klinkt er een glooiend thema op sax, unisono met piano, gevolgd door uitgekiende solo’s, zelfs een 4-om-4 en een geïmproviseerd uit-tro, zoals we die veelvuldig tegenkwamen bij het Keith Jarrett-Trio met bassist Gary Peacock en drummer Jack DeJohnette. De compositie Melodie Antique (ook van Frerichs) heeft een vette link naar Paul Desmond’s Take Five, maar dan als wals, met een smaakvolle drum-solo, gelardeerd met ghost-notes, net zoals in het coda van The moon Stays Bright, When it doesn’t Avoid the Night.
Alle stukken worden strak ondersteund door ontspannen gespeeld drum- & baswerk (soepele solo in If I should lose you) die de muziek een solide basis bezorgt. Prachtig daarbij is de wendbaarheid. Zowel het klavierwerk als het saxofoonspel bewegen zich met een muzikale vanzelfsprekendheid door thema’s en harmonieën.
Zoals de hoes al suggereert, biedt het Jasper Staps / Rembrandt Frerichs Quartet je op The First at Last een warm, muzikaal bad. Het enige wat je nog hoeft te doen, is onderdompelen en genieten!

Truly beautiful debut collaboration album The First at Last by alto saxophonist Jasper Staps and pianist Rembrandt Frerichs together with bassist Matheus Nicolaiewsky and drummer Mitchel Damen.
Although Rembrandt Frerichs and Jasper Staps have known each other for more than 25 years and regularly shared the stage together, it took until the end of 2023 before a collaboration album was released. That’s a long time, but it really delivers excellent music.
The First at Last is an album on which four musicians share their love for powerful themes, new & innovative harmonies and warm timing against a blueprint of a decades-old swing tradition.
The album opens with Carice. A half-time composition by Staps & Frerichs in which it is immediately clear that this quartet radiates unity, both solo and accompanying. In addition to classics such as Isfahan (Ellington/Strayhorn), Easy to Love (Porter), Jerome Kern’s The Song is You and Time and Again (Dutch classic Telkens Weer) by Ruud Bos, Frerichs‘ own work is also included on The First at Last, such as the endearing composition Leaves of Green. With a gospel touch to the work of Keith Jarrett, there is a lovely theme on sax, unison with piano, followed by sophisticated solos, even a 4-on-4 and an improvised out-tro, as we often encountered with The Keith Jarrett Trio with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette. The composition Melodie Antique (also by Frerichs) has a strong link to Paul Desmond’s Take Five, but here as a waltz, with a tasteful drum solo, interspersed with ghost notes, just like in the coda of The moon Stays Bright, When it doesn’t avoid the night.
All pieces are tightly accompanied by relaxed drum & bass work (smooth solo in If I should lose you) that gives the music a solid foundation. The agility of both the piano and the saxophone playing is wonderful, which move through themes and harmonies with musical naturalness. As the cover of The First at Last suggests, the Jasper Staps / Rembrandt Frerichs Quartet offers you a warm, musical bath. All you have to do is immerse and enjoy!
