El Trio bestaat uit drie kleurrijke musici: keyboardspeler John Beasley, bassist José Armando Gola en drummer Horacio ‘El Negro’ Hernández die een scala aan stijlen laten horen op Live in Italy.

Als je drie voortreffelijke musici bij elkaar zet, die op zichzelf al een orkest vormen, dan krijg je: El Trio (Hét Trio). Deze muzikanten hebben een veelzijdige achtergrond, speelden een breed scala aan stijlen met diverse bands en artiesten. Alle drie waren ze te vinden bij de Cubaanse klavierleeuw Chucho Valdés. Horacio ‘El Negro’ Hernández speelde verder o.a. met pianist Michael Camillo, Carlos Santana en met de in 2018 veel te vroeg overleden ster-trompettist Roy Hargrove. John Beasley kwamen we tegen bij de trompettisten Miles Davis, Freddy Hubbard en pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Bovendien won hij twee Grammy’s. Een voor zijn bigband-album MONK’estra en een voor de CD Bird Lives uit 2021, in een eerbetoon aan Charlie Parker. Bassist José Armando Gola speelde o.a. met Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Jennifer Lopez en Luis Enrique. Tja, het is wel een opsomming, maar het geeft mooi weer met wie we hier te maken hebben.
Drie doorgewinterde improvisatie-musici die elkaar muzikaal de ruimte geven, elkaar aanvullen, maar ook de openheid en transparantie opzoeken. Zo horen we in 3 For Africa warm modale akkoorden met een fraaie keyboard-solo gehuld in een Weather Report-mist. Klinkt de verborgen Cubaanse son-montuno in EN4 en vinden we weer een heel ander metier in de jazz-waltz Song for Dub. Bijna alle stukken zijn door de heren geschreven. Beasley bespeelt synthesizers en keyboards met diverse sounds waaronder saw-tooth (lekker schurend in Arroz con Mango) en Fender Rhodes. Bassist Gola heeft een zeer strakke manier van spelen met een puntig basgeluid dat doet denken aan Jaco Pastorius (Weather Report). Hernández’s drumspel is ongekend soepel. Voor hem is geen ritmisch patroon vreemd, links of rechtsom gespeeld. Goed te horen in het bas-drums-duel Timbeando. Luister ook eens naar de koebel in de drumsolo in het daaropvolgende Camino de Mango. Weergaloos hoe strak het koebel-ritme blijft klinken, naast al het vuurwerk dat hij speelt met de andere handen en voeten!
Live in Italy werd opgenomen tijdens de Italië-toer in 2022. De muziek klinkt vanzelfsprekend en organisch en zit vol muzikale heerlijkheden. Soms vol vuur in kostelijk samenspel waarbij de toets-, bas- en drumpartijen als een puzzel in elkaar grijpen, dan weer klein en subtiel met veel oor voor transparantie en subtiliteit. Deze discrepantie is de magische aantrekkingskracht van El Trio die, als je niet oppast, muzikaal verslavend werkt!

El Trio consists of three colorful musicians: keyboardist John Beasley, bassist José Armando Gola and drummer Horacio ‘El Negro’ Hernández who play a range of styles on the album Live in Italy.
If you put three excellent musicians together, who form an orchestra in themselves, you get: El Trio (Thé Trio). These musicians have a versatile background, played a wide range of styles with various bands and artists. All three played with the Cuban keyboard hero Chucho Valdés. Horacio ‘El Negro’ Hernández also played with pianist Michael Camillo, Carlos Santana and star trumpeter Roy Hargrove, who died far too early in 2018. We saw John Beasley play with trumpeters Miles Davis, Freddy Hubbard and pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Beasley won two Grammys. One for his big band album MONK’estra and one for the 2021 CD Bird Lives, in a tribute to Charlie Parker. Bassist José Armando Gola played also with Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Jennifer Lopez and Luis Enrique, among others. Well, it is a summary, but it nicely illustrates who we are dealing with here.
Three seasoned improvisation musicians who give each other musical space, complement each other, but also seek openness and transparency. In 3 For Africa we hear warm modal chords with a beautiful keyboard solo shrouded in a kind Weather Report fog. The hidden Cuban son-montuno sounds in EN4 and we find a completely different metier in the jazz-waltz Song for Dub. Almost all pieces were written by these gentlemen. Beasley plays synthesizers and keyboards with various sounds including saw-tooth (nicely abrasive in Arroz con Mango) and Fender Rhodes. Bassist Gola has a very tight way of playing and a sharp bass sound that is reminiscent of Jaco Pastorius (Weather Report). Hernández’s drumming is unprecedentedly smooth. No rhythmic pattern is strange to him, played left or right. Can be heard clearly in the bass-drums duel Timbeando. Also listen to the cowbell in the drum solo in the following piece Camino de Mango. Unparalleled how tight the bell rhythm remains, in addition to all the fireworks he plays with his hands and feet!
Live in Italy was recorded during the Italy tour in 2022. The music sounds natural and organic and is full of musical delights. Sometimes full of fire in beautiful interplay where the keyboard, bass and drum parts fit together like a puzzle, other times small and subtle with a great ear for transparency and subtlety. This discrepancy is the magical appeal of El Trio and, if you’re not careful, it can be musically addictive!
