All the things you are).

Liveconcert – 9 april 2022: Nassaukerk in Amsterdam.

English version

Standards Live Stream Vol. 1 is an excellent album of the exam concert by pianist Tristan Schmidt and his trio in June 2021.

Pianist Tristan Schmidt is not yet known to the general public, but that will soon change. With his album Standards Livestream Vol. 1 he proves to be is a fine pianist and a great musician. His album was recorded during his exam concert in the Blue Note Concert Hall of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam on June 8, 2021. In the middle of the lockdown, it was a livestream exam concert without a live audience. Fortunately, there is now a concert registration, a CD release under the title Standards Livestream Vol. 1. Yes standards indeed! Six classical jazz pieces that many have already recorded on CD. You really have to an excellent musician if you want to add something to those recordings. And that’s what Schmidt is. With his energetic and inspired playing he takes you into a musical whirlwind, together with his tight accompanists: bassist William Barrett (nice melodic solo in My funny Valentine) and drummer Tim Hennekes (fantastic solo in All the things you are). The piano solos have a balanced structure and are virtuoso. Especially the rubato fragments are magical. This makes his playing detached from accompaniment and rises above the music for a while, before descending again to the firm and grooving rhythm of bass and drums. In these six standards and one own composition The Lack of Lackness  (with an amazing left hand!) we hear a coherent trio of three musicians who give each other musical space. Each piece starts with a piano intro in which Schmidt slowly introduces the listener to the note material, the harmonies and the chords. A beautiful method as we often find in the pieces of Keith Jarrett. Like the intro of I’ll close my Eyes, in which it seems he is playing with three hands(!) or the theme innovations in Autmn Leaves. Standards Live Stream Vol. 1 is a solid debut album where hopefully a Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 soon will be added!
