Geïmproviseerde muziek van hoog niveau tref je aan op het nieuwe album ‘Trinity’ van drummer Joost Lijbaart, zangeres Sanne Rambags en gitarist Bram Stadhouders die hun instrumenten gebruiken op innovatief onconventionele wijze en dezen laten versmelten tot een drie-eenheid.

‘Trinity’, het nieuwe album van Lijbaart, Rambags en Stadhouders, straalt een soort innerlijke rust uit. Maar het meest opmerkelijk is nog wel het instrument-gebruik. Slagwerk, zang en gitaar worden toegepast om er kleuren, sferen en een rijke ambiance mee te creëren. We horen een veelzijdigheid aan klanken en timbres die samen één geheel vormen. Elk instrument wordt dus weliswaar anders bespeeld dan je gewend bent, maar dat vormt juist de eenheid, daar zit de crux en ontvouwt zich de verrassing. Zoals de gitaar-speelwijzen die zich in een razend tempo afwisselen. Het is een aaneenschakeling van solo-, tokkel- en akkoord-fragmenten met veel galm, delay, echo en ‘atmosferische’ geluiden. Iets soortgelijks geldt ook voor de drum/percussie-partijen, die verre van conventioneel zijn. Naast enkele ritmische fragmenten (alhoewel het slot van ‘Calling up the Spirits’ behoorlijk ritmisch is) zijn het toch vooral de korte percussie-achtige gedeelten die opvallen. Speels en soms vederlicht. Steeds zijn beide musici, Lijbaart en Stadhouders, op zoek naar nieuwe muzikale wegen om hun instrumenten, en daarmee hun speelwijzen dichter bij elkaar te brengen. Maar het beste is het innovatieve instrument-gebruik hoorbaar bij zangeres Sanne Rambags. Haar trapeze-vocalen zijn van duizelingwekkende hoogte. Een veelzijdige stem waarmee ze alle hoeken van de muziek hoorbaar maakt. Van recitatief tot fonetische zang, kopstem en in het Engels gezongen teksten, steeds gelardeerd met een flinke dosis galm. Op wonderlijke wijze komen drums/percussie, gitaar en zang zó dicht bij elkaar dat ze een ‘Trinity’ vormen. Zij zijn elkaars muzikale katalysator, die elkaar versterken zonder elkaar muzikaal voor de voeten te lopen. Zo wordt ‘Trinity’ een eenheid die klinkt alsof het allemaal vanzelf gaat, alsof het ze geen moeite kost om zulke bijzondere muziek te maken. Maar ja, daarin schuilt het vakmanschap.

High-level improvised music can be found on the new album ‘Trinity’ by drummer Joost Lijbaart, singer Sanne Rambags and guitarist Bram Stadhouders who use their instruments in an innovative unconventional way and fuse them into a trinity.
Trinity’, the new album from Lijbaart, Rambags and Stadhouders, has a kind of inner peace. But the most remarkable thing is the use of their instruments. Percussion, vocals and guitar are used to create colors, atmospheres in a rich ambiance. We hear a variety of sounds and timbres that creates a lovely atmosphere. Every instrument is played on a different way than you are used to, but that forms the unity, that is where the crux lies and the surprise unfolds. Like the guitar playing methods that changed rapidly. It is a succession of solo, plucked and chord fragments with a lot of reverb, delay, echo and ‘atmospheric’ sounds. Something similar also applies to the drum / percussion parts, which are far from conventional. In addition to a few rhythmic fragments (although the ending of ‘Calling up the Spirits’ is quite rhythmic), it is mainly the short percussion-like parts that stand out. Playful and sometimes light as a feather. Both musicians, Lijbaart and Stadhouders, are always looking for new musical sounds to bring their instruments closer to each other. But the best is the innovative use of instruments that can be heard by singer Sanne Rambags. Her trapeze vocals are from a staggering height. A versatile voice that shows you all the parts of music. From recitative to phonetic singing, falsetto voice and lyrics sung in English, always accompanied by a good dose of reverb. Drums / percussion, guitar and vocals come together so miraculously that they really form a ‘Trinity’. They are each other’s musical catalysts, supplementing each other. In this way ‘Trinity’ becomes an unity that sounds so very easy in creating it. Yes indeed, and that’s what we call musicianship.
