Het Deense duo Elmøe og Hoffmann slaat een deuk in de Noorse folk. Letterlijk weten citern-speler (10-snarig instrument) en gitarist Villads Hoffmann en violiste Emma Kragh-Elmøe de juiste folk-snaar te raken op hun debuut-album ‘Vandkanten’ dat begin vorig jaar 2018 uitkwam.

Van kinds af aan krijgt de kleine Emma Kragh-Elmøe klassiek vioolles, terwijl Villads Hoffmann helemaal verknocht raakt aan de heavy metal. Maar als deze musici elkaar vinden, vinden ze elkaar ook muzikaal in de folkmuziek. Deze samenwerking verloopt zo goed, dat ze de winnaars werden van de ‘Danish Music Awards 2015’. En terecht. Dit duo schrijft en speelt met een ongekende speelsheid. Inventief in ritmiek en samenspel, waardoor je voortdurend het gevoel krijgt dat je naar meer dan 2 instrumenten luistert; wat overigens ook wel het geval is, want in vijf (van de tien) stukken speelt gastpianist Julien Svejgaard mee. Maar toch, het gebruik van melodie, ritmiek en de aanvullende (complementaire) ritmes, als ook de unisono gespeelde fragmenten, geven de muziek een orkestrijk karakter. In een razend tempo wisselen begeleiding, improvisatie en thematiek elkaar af. Het titelstuk, waar de CD mee opent, heeft een peinzende schoonheid. Gevolgd door het ritmische ‘Flugten til sverige’ en de ‘levenswals’ ‘Vals til min fars 60-ars’. Fraai is ook ‘Arets Første’ met geraffineerde maatwisselingen en sprankelende melodie, als tegenhanger voor ‘Bettys Polka’ wat een mijmerende weerspiegeling is met twinkelend pianowerk. Er wordt zo vanzelfsprekend en trefzeker gemusiceerd, dat je er blij van wordt. In de afgelopen drie jaar hebben deze beide voortreffelijke musici alle stukken gecomponeerd. Elke compositie is een weerspiegeling, een muzikale vertelling, van de plaatsen die ze bezochten, gebeurtenissen en mensen die belangrijk voor hun zijn. Die drie jaren moeten fantastisch zijn geweest aangezien deze debuut-CD ‘Vandkanten’ (Waterkant) een van de beste Scandinavische folk-opnames van de laatste tijd laat horen!

Amazing Danish folk played by the duo Elmøe og Hoffmann. Citern-player (10-string instrument) and guitarist Villads Hoffmann and violinist Emma Kragh-Elmøe play only string instruments on their lovely debut album ‘Vandkanten’ which was released in early 2018.
From her childhood Emma Kragh-Elmøe was educated on classical violin, while Villads Hoffmann gets completely hooked on heavy metal. But when these musicians met each other, they also find each other musically in folk music. This collaboration is going that well that in 2015 they became the winners of the ‘Danish Music Awards’. Yes indeed. This duo writes and plays with an unprecedented playfulness. Inventive in rhythm and interplay. They give you a mood that you are listening to more than 2 instruments;. In fact, is some pieces it is the case, because in 5 (from 10) compositions guest musician Julien Svejgaard plays the piano. But still, the use of melody, rhythm and (complementary) rhythms, as well as the unison played fragments give the music an orchestral character. Followed by the rhythmic ‘Flugten til sverige’ and the wonderful waltz ‘Vals til min fars 60-ars’. Also beautiful is ‘Arets Første’ with refined measures twists and sparkling melody, as a counterpart to ‘Bettys Polka’ which is a contemplative reflection with twinkling piano work. The music is played so naturally and accurate, it really makes you happy. In the past three years, these two excellent musicians have composed all the pieces. Each composition is a reflection, a musical narrative of the places they visited, events and people who are important to them. Those three years must have been fantastic years since this debut CD ‘Vandkanten’ (The water’s edge) is one of the best Scandinavian albums released lately!
