‘A tribute to Sax’ is an ode to the music instrument maker Adolphe Sax (1814-1894), who developed the saxophone in 1841. The musicians Alain Crepin and Jan van der Roost compiled a beautiful double-CD, a rich document that shows the versatility of the saxophone in wonderful variations.

In 2014 it was two hundred years since Adolphe Sax was born in Dinant (Belgium), the inventor of the saxophone. The musicians Alain Crepin (foto right) and Jan van der Roost released the wonderful music collection ‘A tribute to Sax’ with original for saxophone written and arranged pieces in chamber music as well as for orchestra, performed by various musicians. This double CD opens with a beautiful ‘Le Corsaire’ composed by Hector Berlioz for a complete saxophone orchestra in which the whole saxophone family appears. Berlioz knew the saxophone, but did not wrote music for it. Really excellent is ‘Grand Quatuator Concertant‘ by Jean-Baptiste Singelée, who composed the first saxophone quartet in history. He was a friend of Adolphe Sax who shows a beautiful melodic composition, performed by The Circling Saxes. Also the trio in Bes majeur by Franz Schubert, where the saxophone leads the violin part, shows a fresh ‘contemporary color‘, like ‘Le Tic-Toc-Choc‘ by Francois Couperin. A piece, original written for harpsichord but arranged for saxophone and recorder! This combination is also to be found in the sensitive composition ‘Duo…’ John Baldwine. ‘Hommage a Adolphe Sax’ is a beautiful lyrical composition by Jan van der Roost in which he shows his musical love to Adolphe Sax. In addition, this compilation features works by Frank Martin, Gloezanov, Gabriel Fauré and the very melodic ‘Rhapsody’ by André Waignein, where the saxophone is played virtuoso by Simon Diriq, accompanied by strings and piano, while ‘Danse Diabolique‘ shows a musical color of the Groupe des Six (group of six French composers around 1900) performed by a fanfare orchestra with its happy chromatics in the middle part. Although the saxophone became more famous in jazz and improvised music, this great album ‘A tribute to Sax’ shows the listener more special compositions which are especially composed and arranged for the saxophone, and that’s absolutely great!
