English version below

Niet alles is even fraai.

English version

The cavaquinho is a small string instrument that most closely resembles to the ukulele. But this original Portuguese instrument has a warmer timbre, another tuning and also to be found in Brazilian music. The Portuguese cavaquinho virtuoso Júlio Pereira shows us his innovative folk approach on new album ‘Cavaquinho.PT’.

Júlio Pereira is a master of the cavaquinho, a small 4-string instrument originally from Minho, a region in the north west of Portugal. As a seven year old child he starts with the mandolin. In his teens he played in various rock bands and recorded several albums. He regularly performed with José Afonso, a politically-committed singer from Coimbra. In 1981, his debut solo album ‘Cavaquinho‘ was released with Portuguese music with a leading part for the cavaquinho. Pereira became a multi-instrumentalist and producer and is a pioneer on this lovely instrument. A wonderful result you will hear on this beautiful album ‘Cavaquinho.PT’ filled with a variety of musical styles extended with a fine booklet with information. We hear the morna from Cape Verde (a Portuguese colony until 1975), sung by Sara Tavaras. Excellent is ‘Museu de Fado’, an instrumental fado tribute. ‘Laranxa‘ is a fast munheira (dance around the windmill) with singer Uxia, the great voice from Galicia (Northern Spain). ‘Cavaquinho.PT‘ is full of instrumental pieces arranged in a folk background, in which the cavaquinho is used in different ways, both with chords and solo, always present and accompanied by guitar, bass, drums / percussion, trumpet, flute and bagpipe. Not every piece is equally beautiful. For example, the Brazilian traditional ‘Peixinhos do mar‘ is closely tied by the strongly present drums. Júlio Pereira’s music is recognizable by it’s fresh melodies, very well and virtuoso played, but his music has also a melancholic part in a way. This duality makes his music magic. Those who do not know the instrument, will be surprised by the flexibility that Pereira has put in his music and for sure he’s the cavaquinho ambassador!
