In 1492 the Spanish Catholic Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Castile and Aragon decided whether the Spanish Jews leave the country of Spain or become a Christian. Many left and took their rich song culture to an area that now extends from North Africa to Turkey and Greece. Thus arose the Sephardic songs, sung in Ladino; one of the Spanish language affiliates. The music on this album ‘Sephardic Journey – Wanderings of the Spanish Jews‘ is not only that Sephardic repertoire, even liturgical music and a selection of Song of Solomon: old religious songs from the early 17th century, we’ll hear on this record. Divided into ‘hymns to Jerusalem’, ‘religious songs’, ‘love and romantic songs’, ‘Sabbath’ and ‘celebration songs’. A refined collection which is performed with care and attention. Solo pieces are interspersed with ensemble singing by the choir Apollo’s Singers excellently accompanied by the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra. In addition to well-known pieces as ‘Kuando el Rey Nimrod‘, ‘La Rosa enflorese‘ of ‘La Komida la Manyana‘ (the final celebration piece), we hear ‘All Naharot Bavel’. A very fine song with lovely serene vocals. Apollo’s Fire, which soon celebrates its 25th anniversary, accompanies the music in various combinations; from duo to full ensemble of 25 members. In this way they create a great variety in sound which makes this album ‘Sephardic Journey‘ a brilliant one and a timeless musical journey!
