English version

How wonderful can music be! ‘River Strings’ is the second album of Djessou Mory Kanté, guitar player from Guinea. A shining album with vibrating and excellent guitars in which he extend the West African horizon. Striking music played in the Maninka tradition from (East) Guinea and Mali.

Sometimes, recordings really hit you with brilliant music: precisely played, tight and so clear. Guitarist Djessou Mory Kanté, born in Guinea, plays music from Mali and East Guinea in the Maninka style. With fine flexible rhythms in moderate tempi he improvises on melodies which move over mostly three harmonies. A way of improvising which is based on the balophone playing. A kind of small marimba which was popular at the end of the ’40’s in Guinea. Something similar we find in the music of guitarist Thomas Mapfumo from Zimbabwe who based his music on the mbira (thumb piano) improvisations. Djessou Mory Kanté, who played with Sékouba Bambino and Salif Keita, is assisted by the Malian super guitarist Djelimady Tounkara (Super Rail Band). Besides we hear the ngoni (string instrument), keyboards, bass and percussion. ‘River Strings’ is inspired by the Niger river which flow through Mali and Guinea. A metaphor for the sparkling strings which flow through this wonderful album!
