English version

Carla Pires is a fado singer for almost twenty years, the national music from Portugal. She started as an actress but finally choose for the music. She recorded two albums and played the young Amalia Rodrigues in ‘Amalia’. A musical about the life and music of the most famous fado singer. Carla Pires will be the musical attraction of the new theatre show ‘FADO’ at the International Dancetheatre.

Fado started at the beginning of the 19th century in Alfama and Mouraria, two neighbourhoods in Lisbon and became the music of the people. At the start of the dictatorship of António Salazar in 1927, times changed. Fado got strict rules and became the music of the rich Fado Houses and the music of the cafes, where the desgarrada started: improvised singing. A perfect location for the fadista (fado singer) to experiment and improve their talent and make a start to the Fado Houses. After the Carnation Revolution of 1974 the fado popularity was at it’s lowest level and fado singers were associated with the dictatorship of Salazar. At the beginning of the ’90 times changed and the fado revival came up. Singer Mariza became a star, just like Cristina Branco. Both were in the Netherlands regularly for concerts. Just like Carla Pires who will perform at the (dance)event ‘FADO‘, a co-production of the Internationaal Danstheater and the Companhia Portugesa de Bailado Contemporaneo (CPBC) from Lisbon.

Carla Pires has a natural warm voice. She sings new fado on her album ‘Rota das Paixoes’, most of the songs written by herself. Every piece is a voice-discovery in which she perfectly reflects the mood: melancholic or joy full. With her full controlled voice she’s a master in measuring the music: the art of let go and just sing what’s important without over-reacting. Luis Guerreiro is her guitarra Portuguesa player, who puts lovely ornaments to her voice by adding a kind of second harmony. Something like the accordion, piano and cello (strings) do and make her voice even shine more. In this manner Carla Pires follows her ‘Rota das Paixoes’, her ‘Passionate Road’ which only sounds brilliant when you are really into it.
