English version

Two  musicians from Vienna create a totally new strings atmophere. On their last CD ‘Neubau’ (released two years ago in 2015) they play their own compositions, balancing on the verge of folk, classical and pop played on violin/mandola and cello. Not recently released music, but it’s so special and timeless that a review is still up to date, even after two years!

Cellist Matthias Bartolomey and violinist/mandola player (kind of big mandolin) Klemens Bittmann are two fantastic musicians who create a whole orchestra as a duo. Of course not literally, but the suggestion, the color and the changing of the different parts and the way they play is so powerful and energetic that you are put into an amazing musical whirlwind. In addition, the different parts of a composition change sometimes so quickly that the music is adventurous, rich and open. They use fine tight rhythms (like cross-rhythms), sometimes vocals (‘Ballercello‘) and even a hardrock-touch in ‘Osten‘ makes their second album ‘Neubau‘ a musical building where the characteristics of the different musical styles are beautifully crystallized and put back in the essence of music. In addition, Bartolomey and Bittmann let their instruments cry, jerk, scratch but also resonate and vibrate. All aspects and modes of play gives the listener a full range of sound and colors which makes you wonder: are you really listening to two instruments? Yes you do! They are played virtuoso, inventive and adventurous, that puts ‘Neubau’ (‘New’) into a fresh and great contemporary album!
