De groep Nabil Baly, rond zanger en gitarist Nabil Baly Othmani, bestaat uit vier musici afkomstig uit de Djanet, een kleine plaats in Zuid-Algerije. Op hun derde album ‘Amghar In’ speelt de band Touargh georiënteerde muziek van de nomaden uit Algerije, Libië, Niger, Mali en Burkina Faso. Energieke pop aangevuld met rockinvloeden.

Bijzonder fraai hoe zanger/gitarist Nabil Othmani zijn Touaregh achtergrond vertaalt naar zijn muziek. Als een zeefdruk blijft zijn muzikale erfenis prachtig hoorbaar. De groep ontwikkelt zich op dit derde album ‘Amghar In’ steeds meer richting popmuziek, maar de Touaregh-cultuur is nooit ver weg. De rauwe gitaren, de polyritmiek, de pentatoniek (5-toons-toonladder), de qraqeb (metalen castagnettes) en prachtige (meerstemmige) voor- en nazang verraden deze Noord-Afrikaanse signatuur waarbij je de warme woestijnwind in je haren voelt, het zand tussen je tenen en de zengende hitte op je hoofd. Nabil Othmani schreef alle stukken op ‘Damaa’ na, dat geschreven werd door zijn vader Othmane Bali. Een gevierd Arabisch luitspeler en componist die in 2005 op 53 jarige leeftijd overleed. Nabil Othmani zingt over geloof, familie en respect in het Tamashek, Arabisch en één nummer (‘Identité‘) in het Frans dat met zijn reggae-ritme en rockgitaar een van de mindere stukken is. Daarentegen zijn ‘Ana Imanet‘, het fijnmazige ‘Amghar In‘ en het groovy ‘Asestan’ betoverend mooi. Met een nostalgische knipoog náár en respect vóór het verleden is de innovatieve muziek van Nabil Baly een rijke aanvulling op de Touaregh cultuur!

The group Nabil Baly are four musicians from Djanet, a small town in southern Algeria led by singer and guitarist Nabil Baly Othmani. Their third album ‘Amghar In‘ the band plays Touargh oriented music of the nomads from Algeria, Libya, Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso. Energetic music supplemented with pop and rock influences.

It’s really great how singer & guitarist Nabil Othmani puts his Touaregh background into his music. It’s like a screen printing the way the music fits in the North African tradition. On this third album ‘In Amghar’ the band developed more towards pop music but the Touaregh culture is never far away. The raw guitars, the poly rhythms, the pentatonic (five-tone scale), the qraqeb (metal castanets) and beautiful (polyphonic) call-and-respond singing fits very well in this culture. It’s like you feel the warm desert wind in your hair, the sand between your toes and the burning sun on your head. Nabil Othmani composed all the pieces, except ‘Damaa‘, which was written by his father Othmane Bali. A celebrated Arabic lute player and composer who died at the age of 53 in 2005. Nabil Othmani sings about faith, family and respect in the Tamashek, Arabic and one (reggae) song (‘Identité’) in French. One of the minor pieces. But apart form that, the songs ‘Ana Imanet‘, the fine meshed ‘Amghar In’ and the groovy ‘Asestan‘ are enchanting and very beautiful. With a nostalgic feeling and respect for the past, the innovative music of Nabil Baly shows to be a rich addition to the Touaregh culture!
