Haar tweede album ‘A Day for The Hunter, A Day for The Prey‘ is geïnspireerd op het gelijknamige boek van de Haïtiaanse schrijver en muzikant Gage Averill.

A Day for The Hunter, A Day for The Prey‘ is in de eerste plaats een protestalbum over de politieke en maatschappelijke wantoestanden in de wereld. A Day for The Hunter, A Day for The Prey‘.

English version

Cellist, singer and songwriter Leyla McCalla (1985) is a remarkable artist. Her second album ‘A Day for The Hunter, A Day for The Prey‘ is inspired by the book by Gage Averill, a writer and musician from Haïti. A book about perseverance, an example for Leyla McCalla!

Primarily ‘A Day for The Hunter, A Day for The Prey’ is a protest album about political and social problems in the world. But it is also a charming singer-songwriter’s CD with subtle music played very accurate and precisely. That is because of the inventive instrument combinations. Without the use of percussion and drums they create a wide sound with just a few instruments. Such as the banjo, violin and sousaphone in ‘Les plats sont … ‘ or the cello (pizzicato and bowed) with violin and guitar in ‘Little Sparrow’. Leyla McCalla sings solo in English, French and Haitian Creole either Patua, but also in vocal harmonies (among others with Rhiannon Giddens) in ‘Manman’ which is a highlight. A fine song with only a sober guitar accompaniment. Some solo singers were invited to sing on ‘A Day for The Hunter, A Day for The Prey‘. Her sister Sabine McCalla sings the song ‘Vietnam’ in which she sounds like a wonderful female version of Jeff Buckley and Sarah Quintanas’ voice sounds clear in ‘Salongadou‘. The electric guitar of Marc Ribot creates a beautiful colour in ‘Peze Café‘, which resembles to the Garifuna music from Belize with the accordion of Amora Nealand. McCalla’s new album contains sophisticated music created by a wonderful musician with an open mind to music creating a great sound!
