La Banda Morisca plays ‘Algarabya’

‘Algarabya’ is de titel van de tweede CD van de groep La Banda Morisca uit Cadiz (Zuid Spanje). Ook hierop speelt dit vijftal een mix van Andalusische (flamenco) muziek in een crossover van klanken uit de Maghreb en de Oriënt. Een spannende en avontuurlijke symbiose die de zon laat schitteren in de Middellandse Zee en aansluit bij de groepen Radio Tarifa en La Jambre.

In de jaren ’90 zorgde de legendarische band Radio Tarifa voor een nieuw Spaans/Orientaals geluid. Mede door zanger Benjamin Escoriza uit Granada die met zijn karakteristieke stem een stempel drukte op deze Zuid-West Europese muziek. Escoriza stierf in 2012. De band La Jambre vertegenwoordigde de mildere, meer folk kant van de Zuid Spaanse muziek. Een schitterende crossover vinden we nu terug in het kwintet La Banda Morisca  waarin leden van beide groepen zijn vertegenwoordigd. JoséMari Cala is de sleutelfiguur en zanger van La Banda Morisca die met zijn flamenco stem (met folk-randje) een fraai gedoseerde en onmiskenbare stempel drukt op de muziek. Maar er is meer wat deze groep bijzonder maakt. Het éénstemmig spelen van melodieën, wat in de Oriënt zeer gangbaar is, gebeurt hier in een ongebruikelijke combinatie van ney (fluit), sax, gitaar en cumbus (soort Turkse banjo) dat wordt aangevuld met bas, drums en percussie. Prachtig zijn ‘Petenegras‘ dat met zijn meerstemmig zang intro (met Lola Vega) uitmondt in een onregelmatig flamenco-rock spektakel. Fraai is ook het openingslied ‘En toite te encuentro’ dat kenmerken bevat van Sefardische muziek en het bezwerende ‘Ziryab y la gacela‘ dat met de qraqebs, de metalen castagnetten, doet denken aan de touareg-muziek uit Marokko. La Banda Morisca is energiek, temperamentvol en geeft met zijn bezwerende klanken de zon volop de kans om in overvloed te schijnen tegen een strak blauwe lucht. Prachtig album!

‘Algarabya’ is the title of the second album of the group La Banda Morisca from Cadiz (South of Spain). Again, this quintet plays a mix of Andalusian (flamenco) music with sounds from the Maghreb and the Orient. An exciting and adventurous symbiosis that makes the sun shine in the Mediterranean Sea.

In the ’90s the legendary band Radio Tarifa created a new Spanish / Oriental sound. Partly because of singer Benjamin Escoriza from Granada who’s distinctive voice put a mark on the South European music. Escoriza died in 2012. The band La Jambre represented the milder, more folk side of the southern Spanish music. A brilliant crossover is now to be found in the quintet La Banda Morisca in which members of both groups are represented. JoséMari Cala is the key figure and singer of La Banda Morisca with his lovely flamenco voice with a folky edge. An exciting voice for splendid music. But there’s more what makes this group so special. The monophonic played melodies, which are very common in the music from the Oriënt, are played in unusual combinations of ney (flute), sax, guitar and cümbüş (sort Turkish banjo) and supplemented with bas, drums and percussion. Beautiful is the song ‘Petenegras‘ with its polyphonic singing intro which leads to an irregular flamenco-rock spectacle (with singer Lola Vega). Beautiful is also the opening song ‘En toite te encuentro’ that contains features of Sephardic music and the exciting ‘Ziryab y la gacela‘ with the qraqebs, the metal castanets, reminiscent of the Touareg music from Morocco. La Banda Morisca is an energetic and spirited band which makes the sun shine in a deep blue sky with their mesmerizing sounds. Great music!
