English version

The enthousiastic band Te Vaka from New Zealand recorded their lovely eighth album ‘Amataga‘. A wonderful new CD which shows the versatility of the Polynesian music.

Te Vaka is a super group from the South Pacific getting more and more worldwide attention because of the many performances in Europe, the U.S. and Australia. In addition, in 2008 the band was named the ‘Best Pacific Band’ at the Pacific Music Awards and in 2013 leader Opetaia Foa’i wrote the music score for the Walt Disney movie ‘Moana‘. Their new album ‘Amataga’ (The Beginning) is a personal one, dedicated to all the people who work for a better environment. For all those who fight for justice, against the culture of greed and selfishness. There’s a guitar, vocals and a lot of percussion in the music of Te Vaka. Nine musicians, including Foa’i’s son Matatia on drums and daughter Olivia who plays keyboard, sings and dance. The group is characterized by powerful harmonies. Beautiful vocal pieces, like the opening song ‘Tele ve ko koe‘. A song with wide and deep harmonies reminiscent of the music from Madagascar. Te Vaka songs are in the Tokelauan language (from the Tokelau island), Samoan, Tuvaluan and English and played in several Polynesian styles. There are percussive chants like the magnificent ‘Te Manaia‘ (were each verse starts one semitone higher). Special are also ‘Mama E’ that Opetaia Foa’i wrote for his sick mother and ‘I Sisifo Papua‘ (‘West Papua’) assigned to the Indonesian province (island) which has been fighting for independence, for years. Te Vaka has become a wonderful group with tight and compact music. A band to remember!
