English version below

English version

A few musicians in Flanders written down the local music, songs and dances. Wim Bosmans, Hubert Boons and Jules Wauters, to name a few. ‘Merci Jules’  is the new 3-record of AmorromA: Baroque harp player Sarah Louise Ridy and  Jowan Merckx on recorder.

Although AmorromA consists of the classical trained harp player Sarah Louise Ridy and Jowan Merckx is the duo regular extended with double bass player Vincent Noiret and singer Elly Aerden. But on this three double album ‘Merci Jules‘ there are only tunes for recorder and harp. The album looks back to the youth of Merckx  at the Belgium town Boortmeerbeek where he got acquainted with traditional music, played at local festivals. Song played by heart: the so called ‘living tradition‘. Jules Wauters was one the musicians who wrote down these tunes and melodies. A wonderful collection we find on ‘Merci Jules‘: a homage to this fellow village mate of Jowan Merckx. Traditional dances like polka, mazurka (even in 5-beat!), waltz, jig en reel are played joyfully and are freshly improvised on solo recorder, with harp accompany and some feet percussion. Although the instrumentation is limited, the music is varied by modulations, virtuoso playing, diverse structures (medley), chromatics and wonderful ornaments. Who takes the time to listen to this fine music, goes back to Belgium at the beginning of the 20th century. ‘Merci Jules’ is an ambitious project for delicate music lovers!
