English version below

English version

Boris Grebenchikov is the father of the Russian (rock)music. In 1972 he established the band Akvarium (Aquarium) at St. Petersburg (Leningrad) with his youth friend George Gunitsky. On this compilation double cd ‘Aquarium 1995-2013′ you’ll find an excellent collection of his his varied work.

Boris Grebenchikov (1953) heard The Beatles when he was at boarding school and loved the music of Bob Dylan. He studied mathematics but was more interested in music. With his friend Gunitsky he started music&poetry group Akvarium at the beginning of the ’70’s. Their big breakthrough came after a festival in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia in 1980. After a collision with the autorities, the music of Akvarium was forbidden but was being played underground and became more and more popular. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, at the end of the ’80’s, Grebenchikov became a little known in the west by his work with Chrissie Hynde and the Eurythmics, but he returned to Russia because of disappointed results.

Grebenchikov was the first Russian musician who used western folk music in his compositions. He has a wonderful feeling for melody in his ballads and folk songs, on which he accompanies himself on acoustic guitar. Although he recorded songs in English, every song on ‘Aquarium 1995/2013’ is in Russian with a few English or French quotes. With his persuasive, convinced and sometimes whispering voice he sings the most wonderful and melancholic songs. We hear Indian instruments like the tabla and the famous flute player Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. And also the Armenian duduk (kind of oboe; played by the wonderful Djivan Gasparyan! as you can see on the youtube up), tin whistles, violin, Ullean pipes, keyboards, accordion, bass en drums. On a few songs plays The Band, once the accompany group of Bob Dylan, and a whole orchestra is on the last song ‘The Faun’. ‘Aquarium 1995/2013’ is a wonderful document from a great Russian singer, still rather unknown in the west, that hopefully will change soon!
